2021 MLB Draft / College Baseball Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
May not make much difference at the end of the day. Teams tend to draft a bunch of high school guys they really don't think they can sign. With just 20 rounds, I would expect virtually everyone will sign because that expectation will be needed to get drafted. So I do expect fewer HS players to get picked but most of them that missed out would be in that group that was going to college anyway.

I really don't think they need past 20 rounds honestly because it's rare someone drafted past the 20th even makes the pros, but it could make the signing of free agents a lot more important as well. I think that would be better for the union since the best available could get a better sign on bonus than he would normally get.

Leiter was given a gift on the ball to the 3B that he bounced across the diamond.. for an error.. but..

A lot of effort by Leiter.. a LOT.. Athleticism on the hill like his is special..

Jaden Hill is a brute.. he leaves the game while flexing his pitching hand.. perhaps a forearm tightening or a tweak to his already once sore elbow.. We'll see..

Interesting game..

Sounds like some not great news here for Hill.

We'll see if this affects his stock, or if he's done enough that a team will rehab him, whatever this injury may be.

Rough break for Hill

Do you think he will still go into the draft this season? If he does how much will he drop?

Indians haven't been afraid of signing guys who have had tommy john in college, hence why we got Plesac..

I am sure some team will try to work out a pre-selection deal whether in 2nd or 3rd for top-10 talent (maybe $1+ mill). Some team will try a flyer in rounds 16-20 area, if not. However, he has all the leverage with the extra eligibility (Covid, assume it’s too late to red shirt year). If $ isn’t right, he should be able come back next year without the “senior” label hurting his negotiations. And, it’s not like, he was going to pitch for a team this summer with late draft. He will be throwing sometime next season. Why not take a flyer for top-10 talent as long as it’s first tommy john and not actually in the first round like Aiken (was good gamble but was too early even with what we knew when drafted).

6'4 RHP Michael McGreevy, UCSB

4 pitch mix, all 50/55, low 90s already, best pitch curve, performer with great K/BB ratio = CLE pick
Add his teammate 6'2 LHP Rodney Boone to the CLE mid rounds draft targets. FB around 90, good secondaries, excellent performer and young/class.

Virginia RHP Mike Vasil another obvious target in the 2-3 round range.

HS targets:
Switch hitting, slick fielding SS Edwin Arroyo is rising, extremely young, very athletic, throws with both hands. Could see them cut a deal with him at 23, similarly to C. Tucker last draft.

Very athletic, high upside/risk C Harry Ford from GA and CF Tyree Reed from CA

I'll bet that L/R throwing trick could be really useful for a second baseman on the pivot.

Local product from Kenston HS building a pretty strong prospect profile.

I sincerely wonder if a local kid being drafted in the first round by the Indians (or whatever the new name would be) and developing into a star could lead to a legitimate boon in attendance. Not saying we would ever have a LeBron like situation, but it certainly couldn't hurt to have a hometown kid become a star here.

Cleveland showed its true colors in 2017.

We were coming off the 2016 World Series, had two MVP-caliber position players in Jose and Lindor. We made a big-spending, flashy free agent signing in Edwin Encarnacion. We had one of the greatest pitching staffs in the history of baseball, the best record in the American League, and we went on the longest win streak in the history of baseball, in the middle of summer with beautiful weather... and we still weren't selling out every game.

You had the absolute perfect storm and fans didn't show up.

It's clear that nothing the team does will change that--but some people continue to point at anything they don't like and say "See! That's why I'm not going!"

Marquis Grissom had a kid who can sling it, now.

I never feel older than when I see these second generation guys, absolutely wild.

Tyree Reed is especially interesting. Baseball America has him as a rising prospect and currently ranked 35th on their big board. Here’s their brief scouting report:

35
Last: 48

Tyree Reed

American Canyon (Calif.) HSOF
Notes:
Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 180 | B-T: L-L
Commit/Drafted: Oregon State
Age At Draft: 18.5

One of the top outfielders in the 2021 class, Reed has plenty of tools and lots of upside, but hasn’t been seen as much this summer as he would in a typical, non-coronavirus year. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Oregon State commit has loads of athleticism and a lean, projectable body. He already has at least three plus tools in his defensive ability, speed and arm strength. Those supplemental plusses should make him an impact defender in center field and a dangerous baserunner, but it’s his offensive upside that makes him one of the top players in the class. Reed has great bat speed and scouts believe he will grow into power very quickly in the future. He starts with an open stance in the box but evens up during his load and fires his hands quickly, with natural loft in the swing. There’s a bit of a hitch in the load and he has a high back elbow, but evaluators don’t seem too concerned about those mechanical quirks and believe he can grow into a true five-tool player.

Also, here’s video of his beautiful swing:

Love the feel of that swing! Worst case is closer to a 4th OF/Billy Hamilton with power... Looks like a worthy pick to me! Lol
