That’s one of the benefits of all these college pitchers. Like Espino is a huge prospect and is ahead of schedule, but he’s been with the org for 3 years and is still just getting to High A (obviously the no minor league season last year had a huge impact). These older guys should move a lot faster.

Speaking of Espino, does he have the same upside Danny Salazar was showing when he was healthy?

More.

Salazar worked off what was a basically just a two-pitch mix (FB/CH) and a sparingly used breaking ball.

Espino not only throws harder, but came out of HS with three plus pitches (FB/CB/SL) and a developing CH.

I'd have to assume a bit more upside than Danny. Not because Danny flamed out but just build, mechanics, his ranking from the jump (organizationally and league wide), and I think he has more pitches that could be viewed as eventual major league quality at the same age.

Throws harder? That is saying something considering Salazar was hitting triple digits at one time

Salazar’s average fastball velocity was about 95 mph.

Espino is more in the Cole/Wheeler class of starters averaging 97+

Every Valera home run highlight has a huge bat flip. Hope La Russa is still around when Valera is in the big leagues.

He's been hurt so much that it doesn't go noticed enough that he has 17 HRs and is slugging over .500 in just 95 games as a pro, most of which was while he was a teenager.

He just needs to stay healthy and the recognition will come.

Espino has hit 103 multiple times this year...a few have been 60+ pitches in too.
Are the minor league guns different?

I remember people saying Karinchak hit triple digits routinely in the minors, and his velocity seems less in the pros.

I know something as simple as clocking the ball at the instant it comes out of the hand versus a few feet away can make a big difference.

His average velo this year is 95.5 and has topped out at 97.4. That said, his fastball velo is in the 87th percentile in MLB.

You may be right, but I don't recall hearing that about Karinchak. He's met my expectations velocity-wise.

Can be. By the stadium guns.

But scouts guns got him at 103 on multiple occasions.
