Super Bowl LVI - Ohio vs Odell

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Is Shannahan severely overrated as a coach? I know they just signed him to an extension in 2020, but it wouldn’t shock me to find him on the hot seat this year. Here’s his record in SF so far:

2017: 6-10
2018: 4-12
2019: 13-3
2020: 6-10
2021: 2-4

Was 2019 just a fluke? What about if this team goes like 7-10 or 6-11? Maybe he’s not on the hot seat at the end of this year, but I’d have a hard time seeing him keep his job if they were under .500 next season.

Damn, so only if Baker had a Chase or Hopkins then he'd be right up there with the big boys.

Possibly. That's an unknown because he hasn't had that. Can't say one way or another. But if you're trying to compare performance of the quarterbacks in terms of yards and touchdowns as you did, the quality of receivers is relevant to that analysis.

I've been wondering that. I think he'll get a huge benefit of the doubt based on all the injuries they suffered and that Super Bowl appearance, but yeah, I think hes losing his luster...

You are neglecting the fact that Dorsey is still the guy responsible for those salaries. He's the guy who made the OBJ and Landry trades. Berry has been a heck of a lot more conscious of salary concerns then Buddy Boy.

I'm curious about something -- why do you think Mahomes' performance this year hasn't been as good as in his prior years? Did he just somehow become a worse quarterback?

I'm 100% sure Berry could've nuked the situation of our pass catchers. Especially with all the cap casualty talk we have here. We didn't hear anything about the lack of WRs when Bake was putting it in Perriman's bread basket.

Didn't the Chiefs scrap the O-Line a little bit? The defense has been horrendous which isn't giving him more chances at offense. He still has Hill and Kelce, going into last week he was still the #1 fantasy QB. I'll have to compare how much time he has to throw compared to years past. His turnovers are up, pretty sure it's 17-18 Int in 18 games.

A good offensive line makes everyone on the offense look better. KC tried to rebuild the line on the fly and it isn't really working out.

Mahomes tries to play hero ball when his team gets behind. Few are better at it. But a QB trying to play too much hero ball without a good line is going to get a concussion.

Curiously, seems like the Orlando Brown trade messed up the offensive line for both KC and Baltimore.

This is kind of my point - I agree that has been the biggest issue for him this year, and when people talk about the Chiefs, that's one of the first things mentioned about why they are struggling offensively, and why Mahomes hasn't been as good as in previous years. Although as you said, he still has Hill and Kelce.

Kinda like Baker without Wills or Conklin.....

Regarding the :doh (1): @SuperSurge....

I'm not claiming Baker is as good as Mahomes. I'm simply saying the recognition that Mahomes' play has been adversely affected by the state of his OL is a consideration that applies equally to Baker. Dude set a completion record through two games until he lost Wills and Landry, and then later Conklin got added to that list. When those things are brought up in the context of Baker, the reaction is sometimes "those are just excuses for his inconsistency". But it can't be both ways, where a crappy line is a legit explanation for Mahomes but not for Baker.

Him and McVay went to the moon.

One actually had a brilliant offensive mind, and the other just simply ran ZBS when no one else did.

Kyle isn’t an awful coach, but if we’re pretending that he’s some sort of savant, he’s not.

I will add with Mahomes performance yesterday.

The line eventually broke down, but something I found super interesting is rather than getting best deep, Tennessee worked to eliminate short throws.

And it’s something I hadn’t really thought about. If you focus on doubling Kelce, and all other focus goes to covering the short passing game… They become very beatable.

If the safety plays glorified off man on Hill, and you keep the short stuff tight, Mahomes has to force the ball a bit more than normal, and you’re no longer guessing and caught on your heels. It was really interesting to see him double clutch so much because the flat was completely gone.
