The Indians head into Yankee Stadium for the last time as the “Indians” for a three-game set against the reeling Yankees, who have lost 13 of 19 and find themselves in fourth place, one-half game out of the second wild card spot. Of those six wins in their last 19 games, three have come against the pitiful Orioles.
I don’t know what’s going on with the Yankees but they desperately need to turn things around this weekend.
The Yankees went 3-1 against the Tribe in Cleveland in April. Seems like years ago.
Aaron Judge is having a great year at .289/.913 with 34 HR’s, 84 RBI’s, and a 5.2 WAR. Giancarlo Stanton is having a solid season with a line of .272/.853 and a 2.7 WAR. After those two nobody is really doing much at the dish.
As a team the Yankees are hitting .231/.717 at home, averaging 4.4 runs per game. Not what you expect from a roster with this payroll.
Judge is hitting .218 in September after a blistering .355 in August. He and Amed Rosario are in the same club.
The Yankees have seven pitchers on their roster age 30 and older. They have six position players 30 and older, including 38-year-old Brett Gardner. They have 60 stolen bases in 147 games. They're old and slow.
Zach Plesac goes tonight against 35-year-old Corey Kluber, who I believe has been the victim of his own success. On May 19, Kluber no-hit the Rangers, throwing 101 pitches. The following start he left after three innings with a shoulder strain and was out three months. Maybe if he had given up a hit the previous game and left after 85 pitches he’d have been fine. Who knows?
Kluber has made three starts since his return and pitched 11.2 innings, allowing 15 hits, 7 walks, and 11 earned runs. Opponent’s OBP is .393. However, he does have 17 K’s so he’s still getting swings and misses. But 7 walks in 11.2 innings is not like Kluber, and he’s also allowed three dingers.
Whether Kluber will show improvement tonight is the question, but I’m sure he’s happy to see the hitting challenged Indians on the schedule
Plesac has been very good in his last four starts with an ERA of 2.66. However, Plesac has been more effective against lefties, probably due to his changeup which breaks down and away from left-handed hitters. The Yankees top five hitters are right-handed: Judge, Stanton, LeMahieu, Torres, and Urshela. This game will present a big challenge for Plesac and he needs to be on top of his game.
Plesac needs to keep the ball down and away from those right-handed power hitters and make them hit it to center field where there is a ton of room and Myles Straw to run down everything.
