The record generated in games being played now.. don't mean squat... what does matter is how these guys are playing.. how they're competing.. how focused they are in being professional big leaguers.. Some guys are stepping up.. others.. not so much.. Demarlo and the rest of the player personnel department (as well as the rest of baseball) are evaluating these guys to see who can play.. who can't.. and who is worth something to the teams watching..We are in spring training mode.
In game decisions in spring training dont always coincide with winning ball games...and they don't right now.
Hale could go with his best lineup every day and ride his best relievers every day the rest of the way, but that isn't his job description right now.
His job is to hold tryouts.
DeMarlo is leading the on field evaluation of several players.. As an example.. during the five game set with the CWSox.. Demarlo decided to leave Anthony Gose in for multiple innings, going back out after pitching, then sitting between half innings, etc.. Gose showed he has a major league arm.. can throw a triple digit fastball on the black (mostly on the RHH's side of the plate), top and bottom of zone. He also showed that he has a slider that he shapes nicely that gets a LOT of swings and misses. If Gose had the kind of defense, when it truly matters.. he would have been unscathed..
It was also a nice story for MLB.. and nice for the Tribe.. err. Guardians to come.. Right now.. Gose has earned another look.. no more.. no less..
