2021 Series #18 | Indians @ Orioles | June 4-6, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You’re leaving out the key part of the deal, which was Encarnacion and cash for Santana. The Indians received cash and Bauers from Tampa for Diaz, and then traded that cash and Encarnacion to Seattle for Santana. The trade was never about Bauers and always about getting out from Encarnacion’s contract/upgrading 1B with Santana. Diaz was blocked here and became the asset that helped the trade go through. Bauers was essentially a throw in who needed to play LF (which Diaz wouldn’t/couldn’t) in order to even get a shot here initially.
Yes Encarnacion was in the deal. I said it was a 3 team trade. In return the Indians got Bauers and money. And Diaz was traded away. So for the Indians it was Diaz gone. Bauers in and money in...just what I posted.

Again, you’re leaving out Santana. I’ll try one more time.

Out:
Diaz
Encarnacion
$5M

In:
Bauers
Santana
$5M

=not what you posted

The Indians needed $5M to help grease the wheels on the Encarnacion for Santana deal. They got it for Diaz.

Fine. Santana in and EE out. I said it was a 3 team deal, didn't I? No matter how you slice it, not a good trade for the Indians. Diaz could have played first or third, and was a good dh as well for the 2017 team. Diaz was dealt because Tito didn't like him.

You said a lot of things that were incorrect. And then changed your argument.

I’m happy to debate the merits of the Diaz trade including where he could have potentially played in the lineup. But that’s not the argument you made.

Bauers was highly rated and many expected him to be an impact bat. He wasn't. The trade was fine but some prospects miss and some miss big. He missed big. It is why you want a loaded system so you can use them as trade bait or in your lineup and have a next up when one fails.

This.
Me and txbuckeye had an interaction a few weeks ago regarding Bauers. I haven't ran into in a game thread since. It was a good time to poke fun at him, and I made sure I put a LoL so he knows it's all love, no harm, no name calling.
Congrats on that. You're a super cool guy.

My bad I keep calling Owen Miller....Owens.....lol
I knew what you meant. I asked the question I did because the options are pretty thin right now. Is it time to recall Gimenez and send Miller back? Maybe Hentges can be replaced by Moss?

Who the fuck is "Owens"?

I never noticed this before but wtf is he throwing popcorn into his eyes?

Not sure how healthy Moss is at this point. He only went 3 IP as a starter for Columbus the other day...

I would guess his 1st 2 times back as a starter were attempt to build him back up (arm strength/ pitch count)..
He went 1.1 IP on May 30, 36 pitches/ 20 strikes & 3.0 IP on June 5, 49 pitches/ 34 strikes.

I doubt that McKenzie will be in Columbus very long.

Thanks Mad! Not much SP depth outside of McKenzie, Quantrill, and Mejia. The problem with them is their innings limits.

As for those debating the ill-fated trade that brought Jake Bauers to CLE, here is the full deal (from Baseball Reference)

December 13, 2018: (Jake Bauers) Traded as part of a 3-team trade by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Cleveland Indians. The Tampa Bay Rays sent cash to the Seattle Mariners. The Seattle Mariners sent Carlos Santana and cash to the Cleveland Indians. The Cleveland Indians sent Yandy Díaz and Cole Sulser to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Cleveland Indians sent Edwin Encarnacion and 2019 competitive balance pick to the Seattle Mariners.

Therefore: CLE got Jake Bauers/ Carlos Santana/ cash while giving up Edwin E/ Yandy Diaz/ Cole Sulser/ 2019 Competitive balance pick (between 2nd & 3rd round). The pick turned out to be

MT88 sidenote: IIRC the amount of money CLE received in the trade was $6 Million in total ($4 million in 2019 & $2 Million in 2020) to help offset the cost of the contract for Carlos Santana for those 2 seasons.

OK, so there were a lot of moving parts, but I always looked at it like Diaz for Bauers and Encarnacion for Santana. Diaz went to Tampa and we got Bauers from Tampa. Edwin went to Seattle and we got Carlos from Seattle. I saw it as two separate trades with some money thrown in to make the contracts work.

But enough time has passed that I'm willing to back off my statement that the Indians gave Bauers so many chances because they traded a pretty good player for him. They stuck with Bauers so long because they thought he might figure it out and they didn't want to take the chance on looking foolish if he becomes the next Santander or Aguilar.

Andres Gimenez has a higher slugging percentage than Yandy Diaz this year

He's a good player and got screwed while in Cleveland, but I don't understand why so many people are losing sleep over that trade. We got Santana's best season of his career in 19

It should be noted that Isaiah Campbell, the CBB pick the Mariner's acquired, has thrown his first pitches as a pro in May of this year (2021).. nearly two years from being drafted to actually pitching... & the delay had no injury attached to it..
