Mejia had two out and a runner on second in the first inning. He got ahead of Arenado 1-2, then walked him. Seven pitch at-bat, one fastball.
Next up was O'Neill. Got ahead 0-2, then started nibbling with off-speed stuff. Seven pitch at-bat, one fastball, infield single on a dribbler to third.
Next batter was Molina. Got ahead 1-2, then walked him in a 10-pitch at-bat. Eight straight breaking balls before the last two pitches were fastballs. Mejia was afraid to challenge the 38-year-old. The walk forced in a the first run.
Next was Carpenter. The score is now 2-1 with two out and the bases loaded. Got ahead 1-2, then gave up a 3-run double on the 5th pitch. No fastballs, three change-ups, the third of which was ripped into the right field corner. Cards up 4-2, ballgame over, Mejia out.
Those four batters saw 29 pitches of which four were fastballs. Mejia was ahead 0-2 or 1-2 on all of them but could not put them away. There were 10 foul balls.
One thing I noticed is Mejia does not pitch up in the zone. Everything is down and he stays between 85-94 mph. Not much change in location or speed. His pitches have good movement but everything was middle and down. It might help if he mixed in a few high fastballs.
