From Hoynes today:
Pitching coach Carl Willis said part of McKenzie’s improvement comes from trusting the mechanical adjustments he made to his delivery during a month spent with Columbus in June.
“Over the last few weeks, the work, the feel that’s allowing him to repeat his delivery has been tremendous,” Willis said Tuesday.
Even though the Indians have fallen out of contention in the last few weeks after hitting the tough part of the schedule, the recent improvements by Quantrill, Clase, and McKenzie have me feeling really good about next year's starting pitching and back end.
Something's also going on with Maton - in his last 11 appearances covering 11 innings he's given up 6 hits and 1 run, and that was on a fly ball that should have been caught but Daniel Johnson misplayed into a triple. Maton has 4 walks and 14 K's in those 11 innings. Maybe it's temporary; his June ERA was 4.26 versus 0.84 in July. I don't know if 30-year-olds suddenly figure something out. But I want to see if he can keep it up for two more months.
