2021 53-Man Roster Cut Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I imagine Hodgel was ahead of Davis on the depth chart, but they were both behind Felton. Does that sound right?

Technically, Davis still hasn't made the 53 man roster. He has a two game suspension. He makes the team if there is an injury to a skill position player before then, or if the front office feels he edged somebody out due to special teams.

No.

Damion Davis didn't make the roster ahead of Hodge and Felton is a RB.

The guys who made the roster ahead of Hodge were OBJ/Landry/DPJ/Schwartz/Higgins--and none of them are surprising to me.

I guess you could say Felton's pass-catching ability, tied with the pass-catching from our tight ends, allowed us to go five-deep at WR instead of six.

Can someone explain why Parkey can’t return this season? Or am I misreading the articles?

Here's how I read the sitch:

1. He was losing the battle because McLaughlin has a stronger leg and there is no clear difference in accuracy.

2. Parkey claims an injury is holding him back, and has the nerve to do it mid-game. That's frowned upon.

3. The team puts him on year long IR. Seemed like he didn't see that coming.

4. The franchise used the IR as a bargaining chip to give up guaranteed money. Every little bit helps with the players coming off rookie deals.

He was placed on IR prior to cutdown, and so could not be designated for return.
After being subsequently waived by Cleveland, he will be permitted to play with any team other than the Browns this year.

Who can give the the lowdown on this dude?

Ohio Native (centerville) NW University, 7th round pick, bounced around the league including previously with Browns, more of a smaller (260lbs) speed end. 27 years old, so probably time has ran out for him to make a splash in the league, but worth a shot on the practice squad as a just in case, but not as a future player to develop.

Basically signed in case of injuries.

You can do worse than Ifeadi Odenigbo as a practice squad guy.

To compare...

Odenigbo has 38 hurries and 11 sacks in 707 career pass rushes. A hurry every 18.6 rushes and a sack every 64 rushes.

Porter Gustin has 13 hurries and 2 sacks in 301 career pass rushes. A hurry every 23.2 rushes and a sack every 150 rushes.

Odenigbo is a guy I’ve liked since high school at Centerville.

Turned himself into a quality depth player in the NFL.

I'll pretty much never have any expectations for the sixteenth guy signed to the practice squad.

Right. It's a rare Sunday when the fans at home are clamoring for the team to call up someone from the practice squad. This year, out of the 9 defensive linemen that Berry kept, 6 have notable asterisks or question marks--

DE Jadeveon Clowney (Injury history)
DE Takkarist McKinley (Focus, limited training camp)
DE Jordan Elliot (2Y, Still somewhat raw)
DT Andrew Billings (Conditioning)
DT Malik McDowell (4 years away from football, behavior issues)
DT Tommy Togiai (Raw Rookie Prospect)

Lining up quality vets on the practice squad who can play real snaps on short notice is less of a luxury and more of a responsibility to the rest of the team.

DT Sheldon Day - 20 games in last 2 years / 2 starts / PFF Grade = 56.8
DE Porter Gustin - 20 games in last 2 years / 3 starts / PFF Grade = 61.3
DE Ifeadi Odenigbo - 30 games in last 2 years / 15 starts / PFF Grade = 60.7
