Watching Dallas lose to Killian Hayes and Marvin Bagley...

Jason Kidd is losing these guys
I'm also sick of seeing these early season MVP lists that don't have Mitchell on them but they have Doncic, Curry, and Haliburton on them. All teams with inferior records while Mitchell is over here leading the 3rd best rated team in the league.

If Mitchell won the MVP he would be the shortest MVP in over 20 years, since Allen Iverson who was the shortest MVP ever

What do you think the threshold is for him getting fired mid-season? It certainly seems like Brunson was a bigger loss than anyone anticipated. Dinwiddie and Luka don’t work all that well together. Dinwiddie probably just need to be moved to the bench and let him be the 6th man.

From the limited amount I’ve seen them play, their best lineup seems to be Luka, Green, TTHJ, DFS, Wood, but it’s not used that often.

I think you are underrating Dinwiddie a bit here. I've only watched them once, but it was live against Was without Beal or KP. Dinwiddie carried the offense when Luka sat, but did the best job of getting himself in position to take good shots when Luka was out there.

DFS and Kleber didn't move much and pretty much just sat in the corner. THJ kept catching the ball like 3 feet behind the line and throwing up clangers, although he also did better when Luka was resting.

Josh Green, who I really liked going into this particular game, was a disappointment. Dallas ran their offense through him for a few minutes when 2 of Dinwiddie/THJ/Luka sat. He kept driving into the paint and either took and missed really hard layups around Rui, Gafford, or Kuz or walked it back out to the perimeter to try again and wasted like 10 seconds of the shot clock. He was pretty bad on D too. Imo it was a really bad showing for him, but that was probably the 2nd strongest impression I has from that game.

Luka was Godawful and got outplayed by Kuz. I think he was super tired...it was the game after he broke his 30 point streak and a b2b. Kidd just rode him way too hard.

On the flip side, I have no idea why Wood doesn't play more. He was out against Wash, but having a big that can create their own shot would be a boon for the Dallas offense. As I mentioned above, Kleber has a similar role to Dean Wade on offense. Dwight Powell is an underrated passer for sure, but I'm not that scared if he catches the ball outside 3 feet from the rim.

This post ended up being longer than I expected, but honestly Dallas was super disappointing and I think a large part of it was Kidd getting out coached hard and relying on Luka magic and a hot Dinwiddie to beat a Washington team that was relying on Kuzma, Will Barton, and Monte Morris to create their entire offense.

Detroit is going to be a tough out. If I am thier GM, I am trading Killian at the deadline for draft capital. They will be in the lottery this year, and will have a shot at a quality 3.. I might consider adding Stewart to the trade list too.

Dallas will end up winning like 46-48 games but I don’t think they’d be that fun to support, they rely so much on Doncic doing everything and I’m not convinced they need to or it’s the best thing for them

I miscalculated that they were going to try to compete this season. Their tool shed of talent is pretty stocked already but Weaver is taking one more stab at the lottery. They are being SUPER conservative with their young core players (Cade, Ivey just missed 3 games with an untied shoe, Jalen Duren is getting 20 mins a night when he's ready for and should already be playing 30) so they can keep their draft this season, see what they have in young non-Weaver lottery picks (Bagley, Killian, Beef Stew) and then go from there.

Personally, I value Stew and Saadiq Bey alot more than they seem too. Beef had 10 rebounds in the first half on only his 2 game back after sitting like 5 games, and Saadiq has been supplanted by an over the hill Bogdanovich where he was on a Mikal Bridges-lite trajectory before the Bojan trade. I'd be on the phone with them now and would have given them Sexton straight up for him.

Moral of this story... they will intentionally win -25% of their games this season looking to add one more core piece to the trio of Cade, Ivey and Duren. They are misjudging some of their other young talent and are ripe for pillaging.

Sad about Dallas. Not extending Brunson and then losing him was a huge own goal. Would hate to see Luka wasting his talent on a team that can’t contend

I’ll be really interested to see how they approach the rest of the season. They are projected to have somewhere around $35M in cap room and can get to $50M+ just by declining team options for Noel and Burks or taking back expiring money.

I don’t know what Cam Johnson will command in RFA, but he’s a guy I’d be targeting if I’m Detroit. I could even see them flipping Bey to the Suns for him. If they could find a 3rd team for Crowder, Bey + Noel + Burks for Johnson + Saric + piece from 3rd team is a low key great trade for both teams. If you could have Ivey, Cade, Johnson, and Duren going into the off-season as your core with another lotto pick coming plus a bunch of cap space, I’d really like where I was at moving forward.

If Stewart is available I’d love to see what he costs. Probably more than what we have but he’d be great as a 3rd big to play with Allen or Mobley.

I have no problem with Dinwiddie. I just don’t think he’s a great fit as a starter with Luka on that team. Dinwiddie came off the bench most of the time last year and they were able to make that work, primarily because Brunson was able to be more effective off-the-ball and creating his own shots. There’s a lot of PGs I think Dinwiddie pairs great with, but I don’t think Luka is one of those guys. I think he’d be great with guys like Halliburton, Mitchell/Garland, Smart, etc, but not with guys like SGA or Luka.

I’d actually like to see them start Luka, Bullock, THJ, Wood, and McGee and see what happens. Pull McGee and Bullock after like 3-4 min, slide Wood to C, and bring in Dinwiddie and DFS. That makes more sense to me than the lineups they’re running.

They can just use McGee like the Warriors used Bogut and others in the past. He can be the token starter at C who plays like 10-15 min a game, sets the defensive tone, and then gets swapped out for more mobile/switchable guys.

Stewart is that classic undersized but blocky center. But he has range.. I am thinking he plays at PF rather than center.. but he might be a good fit with Evan, when we are playing bully ball inside...

I am not big on Bey. What's he bring that Deaner doesn't do better? .I think they will get more for Hayes than I am willing to pay, but he is that tall point guard everyone seems to think we need..

I agree with that. The rotation you propose here is pretty interesting. You have a pretty switchable lineup out there when McGee is on the bench. I assume Powell eats the remaining 5 minutes and he does a solid job switching. I think there are a lot of things Kidd could do to make it work, but he is really the problem with Dallas right now I feel.

Luka revolting is the only thing that'll get Kidd fired anytime soon.
