2022 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Oregon, Washington, Utah, Colorado (which just left the B12), Arizona and Arizona St.

No idea what Cal, Wazzu and Oregon St are going to do.

Stanford might be able to piggyback to the B1G with ND

I haven’t followed this much but seems like the Academic Pedigree of Stanford and Cal would be obvious fits for the Big Ten assuming that AAU thing still controls.

The USC/UCLA move says to me that the B1G is only going to consider you if you make the financial pie bigger for the conference. USC does that. UCLA doesn’t, but that was the only way USC was coming so that’s still a net positive.

I don’t think Cal or Stanford bring a whole lot of new $$$, so I don’t see a world where those teams get added to the B1G on their own.

Now, if Notre Dame wants in, but says ‘hey, we’re only coming if Stanford comes’ then Stanford is in. But outside them piggybacking onto someone else, I don’t see the fit.

UCLA makes the pie bigger in basketball. Plus, Chip Kelly is a big name in the college football world. It’s obviously a tougher conference, but I think it might help recruiting for UCLA. It will be interesting to watch how their 23’ and 24’ recruiting classes change in the next couple months.

Regarding basketball... (the video might not cue up to the correct spot... if it doesn't, the basketball part starts at 1:05:14)

By the way, this podcast episode was extremely interesting and informative. It's well worth everyone's time to watch the entire thing.

What’s the summary regarding basketball, or where does the basketball part start? Not watching a 2 hour podcast.

The link should start right at the mark where they start talking about basketball. If it doesn't auto cue up to it, go to 1:05:14.

What he says doesn’t address conference media deals. When I was referring to UCLA’s value, I meant as a top tier basketball school that would help carry the L.A. market through the winter months and add interest come conference tournament time.

The guy In the video is only talking specifically about March Madness money and the TV contracts for the tournament.

It's always amazing to see programs that aren't even doing well get caught up in this shit.
$60k over 3 years barely gets you a good condo. No way it would take mediocre program like Tennessee and make them any better.

3k was paying a recruits mothers medical bills. The vast majority seems to be paying for families to come watch their kids play or come on recruiting visits.

Given that schools are now just playing players to come play…this is a nothing burger to me. Give some people a slap on the wrist, then figure out how to actually legislate NIL.

You've all been waiting. You've all been craving it. It's time.

My terrible preseason top-25 list with zero bias except that I'm a bit biased:
  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Georgia
  4. Utah
  5. Clemson
  6. Texas A&M
  7. Michigan
  8. Notre Dame
  9. Oklahoma
  10. Michigan State
  11. USC
  12. NC State
  13. Oregon
  14. Baylor
  15. Oklahoma State
  16. Wake Forest
  17. Texas
  18. Miami (FL)
  19. Wisconsin
  20. Pittsburgh
  21. Cincinnati
  22. Arkansas
  23. Kentucky
  24. Iowa
  25. Houston

11 Warriors just posted a cool story about "perfect" conferences when mapped up geographically that still do a solid job of keeping tradition alive:

Midwest Conference
Archie Griffin Division: Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, Toledo
Barry Sanders Division: Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Northern Illinois, Kansas State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas

East Coast Conference
Jim Brown Division: Penn State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Maryland, Rutgers, Navy, Army, Boston College, Syracuse, Marshall
Lawrence Taylor Division: Clemson, Georgia, App. State, Virginia Tech, NC State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia

Southern Conference
Bo Jackson Division: Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Auburn, LA-Lafayette, Baylor, Houston, Miss. St., Ole Miss, Arkansas
Deion Sanders Division: UCF, Florida State, Florida, Memphis, Miami (FL), Louisville, Tennessee, Kentucky, GA Tech, Vanderbilt

West Coast Conference
Earl Campbell Division: Oklahoma, Boise State, BYU, Utah, TCU, Air Force, Texas, Texas Tech, Arizona, Colorado
Ronnie Lott Division: Oregon, SD State, Stanford, Washington, USC, Arizona State, UCLA, Washington State, Cal, Oregon State

Who's Left - Lower Level Conferences
Midwest: Akron, Arkansas State, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami (OH), Middle Tenn, Ohio, Western Kentucky, Western Michigan, Tulsa
East Coast: Buffalo, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, GA Southern, GA State, James Madison, Liberty, Old Dominion, Temple, UConn, UMass
Southern: FL Atlantic, FL International, LA Monroe, LA Tech, North Texas, Rice, SMU, South Alabama, South Florida, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane, UAB
Western: Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Nevada, San Jose State, Texas San Antonio, Texas State, UNLV, Utah State, UTEP, Wyoming

The best teams in the lower level conferences play each other in a mini National Championship for a right to get promoted.

Say the two worst teams in the Midwest Conference are Northwestern and Kansas. Then say the two best teams in the Midwest (lower level) are Bowling Green and Western Michigan.

Northwestern and Kansas both play each other - loser gets sent down to the lower level conference and is replaced by the winner of BG and Western Michigan.

Obviously will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER happen - but I thought it was an interesting read and concept. Would be something fun to throw into a video game. You get punished for being Rutgers year in and year out in this system.
