2022 Hot Stove

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Cause they cut Arenado and have some money to spend...
And spent money is all that that will happen from that deal. Well, that and playing time being taken away from a younger guy that fits in their window.

What are Guardian fans supposed to think or feel about the silence? I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of waiting until an agreement is reached to do anything. They're not signing any huge FA contracts regardless so what's the strategy here? We thought they might have the opportunity to pick up a roster crunch victim, but doesn't look like that's gonna happen either. Patience......right?

Meanwhile, we jackasses sit around our computers arguing with one another about what they might or need to do. I'm out of Sailer Jerry right now or I'd just get fucked up.

I can't speak for others but I think 2 things:
1) Patience is key. Many want a deal to be made (myself included), but it doesn't mean make a bad/ poor deal.
2) CLE is not the only team to not make a trade or sign a player to a major league deal.
-------------------------------------------------
Bimbo has tried to inform many of us on these boards that items were in the works, but there are a number of teams taking a wait & see approach with the CBA negotiations. Perhaps he was referring to CLE in that regard. I got the sense CLE would be willing to make a move if they believed the right move was available & they have targets among the teams waiting on how the CBA plays out.

If that makes me an optimist then fine. I feel I am more realist then optimist. Either way, I will not be the pessimist.
Seems there are a number of those on these boards currently & a waiting list to join that group...

I'm no pessimist for sure, but we have to consider the possible ramifications of our decisions. I understand patience is key Mad and I don't expect the world by any means, but let's be logical here. If they dick around and wait to do what they need to until the CBA is reached, then they're going to be at a bigger disadvantage than they are now because the DH is going to be universal. When that happens we revert to bidding wars with teams for players that otherwise would have been less in demand and that doesn't end well for Cleveland regardless if it's prospect or monetary capital.

The difference with Cleveland not being the only team to sign or trade a player is that they need to if they want to contend in 22. All the other teams already have a loaded team(Yankees) or are pretty much in rebuild mode. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I've been led to believe that this team is looking to contend going forward. Are they going to walk the walk or talk about strategies and unfair market circumstances............again?

There is the real chance that this team is not ready to be competitive in 22. If Mike and Chris make that determination then I'm perfectly fine with that. In fact, I would very much respect that because it gives us a clear path forward. What I don't like is this wishy washy, every move being determined by outside influences bullshit. If you can't play in the market then stay the fuck out of it and continue to build this team within your means and strengths. That may mean that they should trade JRam. That may mean that they need to trade another SP. What it doesn't mean is that they should screw around with waiting to acquire mediocre players that don't swing the pendulum much.

This FO has always been extremely deliberate and tight lipped.

They have always taken advantage when they see an opening.

So far, they have passed on three catchers...Gomes, Stallings, and Alfaro, not to mention Berto. They also passed on Calhoun.

Except for a short term signing, they were never gonna participate in the FA market...unless somebody falls thru the cracks, like Encarnacion. The action was always gonna be on the trade side.

We fans don't know what the FO has been doing, but we do know that they are doing something...and we will be the last to know when it happens, just like when we acquired Straw. It was well after the fact when we learned that the FO had been negotiating with Houston over Straw for a long time.

The history of our FO and everything that they have done since the 2016 international class and the Bauer trade point to them making a major move before the end of winter....maybe two.

Before hitting a grand slam, you have to have (in Drennan's best voice) ducks on the pond. The FO has been lining up their ducks for a long time.

I guess the lockout means no rule 5 draft for a while?

The Mikwaukee-Boston trade is curious.

Boston gets Jackie Bradley Jr back...plus two mid level inf prospects, one of which was a 2021 third round pick.

Milwaukee gets Renfroe.

Bradley will make about $2 mil more this year....but has a guaranteed $8 mil buyout next season. Renfroe is controlled for two years.

In essence, Boston buys two prospects and hopes that Bradley will hit. He ranked last in wRC+ last season among players with 300 PAs.

Milwaukee shores up an offense that was only so so.

Hard to believe we couldn't beat that deal isn't it. Makes me think that Boston didn't even discuss this with our FO or maybe Milwaukee put the effort forth to make it happen. I posted in the other thread that if you told me the only moves we would make this year was getting Happ, Renfroe, and a C while keeping everything else intact I would have been good with that, even kinda happy.

Someone noted in the R5 draft thread that the mlb portion has been cancelled but the minor league portion is moving forward like normal..

I am an optimist when it comes to the Cleveland Guardians. I have a lot of faith in Chris Antonetti that he has a plan for this offseason. I am willing to be patient.

I am a pessimist when it comes to the CBA negotiations. I fear that possible changes to the CBA makes it even harder for a small market team to compete.
