2022 NBA Draft Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I feel like we have more consensus this year at 14. Obvs we don't know who will be there, but most people are in on Eason and Daniels if they are there and then a more swing for the fences pick like Dieng if not.

Quite simply, I want the guy with the highest upside, even if it takes him 2-3 years to achieve that. If all goes as planned, the Cavs won't be picking this high again for quite some time.

Unless they plan on letting Sexton walk (or trading him), I don't know why they'd pick TyTy at #14...

It might be just talk to get someone to trade up for TyTy but it could just be leaning into where they think they can best scout and develop a player. If BPA doesn't line up with an area of need, it might make sense to draft a player like TyTy since the front office might feel they are good at identifying guards and feel the coaching staff have a solid developmental plan for guards too. It might be the best way to maintain the asset to eventually make a trade for a wing or another area of need.

This is not me advocating for for TyTy, but I would imagine the line of thinking to support taking him would be that you are building around Mobley and Garland for a 6-10 year period with their true primes being a few years off still. Not building solely based on current roster construction. NBA shows time and time again that multiple playmaking ball handlers who can also get their own are critical.

At first glance, TyTy would not and will not be in my main silo of guys as like most of us, mine is slotted with wings/big wings, but I have an open mind to the best long term fits around Mobley and Garland.

Just to be clear, I have zero issue with TyTy as a person or player; I just don't know how he gets playing time on *this* team...

Garland is an All-Star point guard about to get a max deal... They traded some decent assets for Caris LeVert... They spent the #5 pick on a SG a couple years ago... They're about to resign a guard... They have said they need a veteran PG...

Where does TyTy play?

And yes, we can do this with forwards and bigs, too.

I would be pretty disappointed with TyTy too honestly. Even if he were slightly BPA at, that should be a tier that has quite a few guys close to each other, some of our wings too.

I think it's just a smokescreen though thankfully.
I do too.

Koby traded for Rubio last summer and then Rondo during the season. He wants veteran backup PGs (plural).

I’m thinking the Cavs’ backup PGs next year will be Rubio + another vet acquired this summer, whether via trade or FA. (With LeVert/Sexton, if either/both are still here, as guys who can play the lead guard if needed in short doses.). I don’t think he wants to leave the team to a 20 year old rookie when Garland isn’t on the floor.

I think if you draft TyTy Washington, it's likely because 2 of LeVert, Sexton, and Okoro are being trade for an upgrade at SG or SF.

It's not my preferred pick either, but given how well Garland played with Rubio last season (another 6'3" PG), I can see how they'd like to add a playmaking guard that can be here long-term.

I want them to be looking at the latter as well actually. Very much. We saw the ridiculous ceiling when Rubio is on with Garland, imo we should try really hard to replicate some of that long term.

But that guy needs to be a good defender at the 2, and TyTy isn't that guy unfortunately.

What I think though, is that our first pick - whether top 4 or 14th - will be used on a wing, and actually our 39th should be used on a tall, ball handling, playmaking 2/3. There are quite a few of those, like Dalen Terry, Jalen Williams, Vince Williams, Alondes Williams (lol all the Williams'), Jordan Hall.

Those are all guys that have shown some very nice handle/creation/playmaking abilities, and could be eased in and developed behind an established rotation, so that in few year they could come in and take Rubio's role and complement both Garland and Sexton.

Starting to be really excited for our 39th actually. Even if we don't go with those guys there is more options with some crazy raw high ceiling guys like Leonard Miller or Josh Minott. Or some nice role players like Braun could slide.

Exciting times!

My guess is he plays backup PG with limited minutes when everyone his healthy. If we draft TyTy, I doubt we go after a vet backup PG. I think he is the first person in line to get an expanded role whenever someone is injured. I think we have the flexibility to reshuffle things to account for an injury in whatever position it happens. What I don't think we have is a guy or two that can elevate their play with an expanded role. It might force JBB to create different lineups when I juries happen which I think is necessary to develop this team further.

If they like TyTy, they probably imagine him growing from the backup PG spot to becoming a player that other teams might view as a starter. He could grow in a similar path as Eric Bledsoe or Terry Rozier, then he becomes a valuable trade piece for us.

I'm not advocating going this route unless they think he is a tier above everyone else that is left. Id rather go for Dyson Daniels, Dieng, or Eason (in that order) who have the ceiling plus the team has an available role to develop into a long term piece for us.

TyTy Washington just has that profile of another Kentucky guard tailor made to be a successful NBA player. Strong. Athletic. Good size. Shotmaking. BBIQ.

He’s just a rock solid prospect. Impossible to NOT like Ty Ty.

Dyson Daniels has all the physical and mental tools you could ask for in a guard besides one very important one: shooting. There’s hope it’s not completely broken given his FT shooting but I’m not sure I see the potential for him to be a great or even good shooter anytime soon.

While there may be truth to the Cavs liking both players I am sure the Cavs would love for the league to think they’re enamored with these two guards, hence why they fed the info to their team mouthpiece in Fedor. They certainly don’t want teams to know they’re internally starving for length, defense and shooting on the wing or else it becomes that much harder to navigate draft day.

Or perhaps there’s some roster changes that are being envisioned by decision makers

But also, you can’t force liking some prospects more than others just because they fit a dire need more directly. If these guys are all on the same “tier” that’s one thing but if the Cavs are looking at a big board where Dyson Daniels or even Ty Ty are tier B guys and they’re on the clock at 14 and they have a choice between one of those guys and a Tier C guy that happens to be a 6’8 potential wing 3 and D type….you have to take the Tier B guys. You just have to. Now if you have 3 Tier B guys all available then fit and need can start becoming bigger factors for consideration.

Jordan Hall is someone I also like at #39 even if we take someone like Dyson Daniels or Dieng at #14. He might not be great defensively but if he can handle the ball, playmake, and shot at his size, it will add versatility to our rotation.

I believe in a guy like Dieng more than a guy like Daniels shooting wise. At least Dieng had a legitimate period at the end of the year where he looked like a competent and capable shooter after a dismal first half of the year. The numbers ended up ugly but I saw a big correction in form and consistency. Daniels was just pretty consistently….bad with the jumper but was more consistently productive overall
