A sixth man - especially one like Herro - is still going to play a lot of minutes with the starters, and so must still be able to get his buckets within the flow of the normal offense. You could make it so Sexton isn't on the floor at the same time as Garland, but then he's not playing enough minutes to justify that salary

I agree, he will have to know when to turn it on and not, but Herro had to learn too. He will need to play 15 minutes or so with Garland, but Garland does great with the ability to play off the ball and on the ball.

I dont know if we extend LeVert this offseason, i think this year will be an extended tryout. WIth injuries, both Levert's and others, it was hard to see how LeVert fit with the starters. On paper it should be good, but we dont play games on paper.

I'm not at all sure the Collin is the type of guy who would - wrongly - believe that hero ball is the best way to a big contract. Last season, he definitely was making an effort to fit more into the flow of an offense and not play hero ball. And certainly, he and his agent have both heard those criticisms.

My guess is that if he was trying to "prove himself", he'd probably do it in the right way.
Hopefully, but most guys realize they need to put up numbers to achieve their contractual goals. Only time would tell if Collin could take a backseat and even come off the bench, if the team decides that’s the best role for him.

I still a fan of keeping him. I think the degree to which he actually improves during crunch time and responds positively to pressure, is comparatively rare. It's a quality you need on a roster to take that step into true contender territory.
If you take out those two games against the Nets where Kyrie was guarding him, the evidence that improved during crunch time and responded positively to pressure is really, really wanting. There were plenty of misses and turnovers with him taking the last four or five shots. He really struggled to adjust after the league started keying on him in the closing minutes. He was unable to make the opposing team pay for doubling him or crowding the paint. It's not like there's a huge sample size as we weren't in a lot of close games with him as the lead guard, but removing those two Brooklyn games from his *crunch time* numbers paints a very different picture of Sexton as a clutch player.

Anyway, if he signs on as a sixth man, I have absolutely no problem with him playing an instant offense, hero ball role off the bench. His best games last year, again in a limited sample size, were not when he was trying to fit in as starter and a more complicated offense, but when Sexton got to be Sexton and just feast against bench units. Make sure K. Love gets his touches so we don't have to go through all that again, but other than that, shoot away. If he eventually gives you more than that, great. But if he excels in that role alone, I'd forgive the Cavs for paying a little extra for it.

My chief concern is having those types of conversations before making the offer because I really want everyone's expectations to match up before the Cavs obligate themselves to a long-term deal.

Amazing what being a role player on a championship contender does for perception.

Wiggins is the same player right now that he's always been. The only number that's improved is his 3 point percentage, and we know how Steph's gravity works in that regard.

He's not an all-star caliber player just because the Warriors organization outsmarted everyone with the fan vote. He wouldn't have got in as a reserve.

Knowing now that Darius is going to get a max and that Mobley is really good, I'd flip money for Wiggins just because the Cavs aren't going to sign a better player in free agency, but he's hardly worth a king's ransom or anything like that.
Wiggins is good. He’s never lived up to his hype and will never be a superstar, but he’s a very good two-way player. He’d be an upgrade over Markk at the 3 and would fit what we already have in place about perfectly. At 27 he should have a lot of good basketball left in him. Like you, I wouldn’t break the bank for him, but he’d be a nice addition.

Wiggins could absolutely be moved.

But the price might be too high for the moment.

Wiggins is...

Harrison Barnes can be had for cheaper.
I would be all for Classy Barnes depending what the Cavs do with their first rounder.

Some team is gonna overpay for Wiggins and get fleeced by Golden State in the process. Personally, I hope it’s not us.

Regarding Sexton, I could see us viewing his value similar to how we value markkanen, an important piece, but not an untouchable core piece. So a long term deal averaging around 17m makes sense. And since there probably isn't another team that can pay him more, could make sense for both sides.
I'm sure him and his agent want more, but the market is what it is. I hope it plays out that way, I want him here long term, as our 3rd guard.

Similar story with Levert, but a bit more complicated since it would be an extension to an existing deal, probably would end up costing us more to keep him. I want him here as well, but kinda a chicken/egg scenario where he wants the extension now and we want to wait to see how he looks with our starting group after a full training camp.

A lot of interesting roster building decisions to be made over the next month or so.

Speaking of wings.. if KD becomes available and there are no Kyrie strings attached...

Why don't we analyze him by removing his two worst crunch time performances?

I would caution about thinking Wiggins is who he currently is on the Warriors. Put Lauri or LeVert on that Warriors team and we would likely be saying similar things.
Got into a debate with posters on another board who reacted when I said I would be careful about Wiggins and I don't see him as a intense defender. Many think he's a elite defender.I do not. With GS he's able to do things he did not do with Minney. And this is one issue I have with him. He did not play defense there , as he was concerned with putting up numbers . Great players will play defense no matter where they're at.

Question - Presumably we offer Garland the max this offseason (and also, presumably, he takes it). His cap hit for 2022-2023 is still $7M, right? And then it will jump up in the season after (roughly replacing Love's salary, plus a little).

Is that correct?

You are correct. Wiggins in Minnesota was basically a tank commander.
