The home stand continues with a weekend series against the 13-25 Tigers. The Tigers started out 6-7 but have since gone 7-18 with five of those wins coming against the Orioles, A's, and Pirates; three teams well under .500. They have a lot of injuries including three starters out.
The Tigers are 5-5 at home but only 4-12 on the road.
The Tigers are last in the majors in scoring at 2.76 runs per game. They're last by a long way with the next worst team averaging 3.30 runs. They've only scored 21 runs in the last 9 games.
Last year the lowest scoring team in the majors averaged 3.76 runs per game, so the Tigers are a full run below that. They may turn out to be a historically bad team offensively if they don't start hitting.
The Tigers top six players in terms of plate appearances are hitting .161, .205, .286 (Miggy), .204, .207, and .173. Against right-handed pitching the team is hitting .210/.563. They rank 29th in OBP, slugging percentage, and OPS.
The Tigers are 11th in team ERA at 3.60 so this could be a low scoring series.
Aaron Civale goes for the G's tonight. Civale has been one of the three worst starting pitchers in baseball so far with an ERA of 9.85. Hopefully the Tigers anemic offense will be just what the doctor ordered to help Civale get back on track. As bad as the Tigers are offensively they're even worse against RHP's so Civale has a chance to have some success and get his season turned around. They're also hitting worse on the road.
The Tigers are starting three young right-handers this series, starting with 25-year-old Tarik Skubal, who is off to a great start with a 3-2 record and a 2.50 ERA. Skubal has an ERA of 0.95 in his last three starts so the G's will be going up against a hot starter. He shut out Oakland and Baltimore over 13 innings in his last two starts.
Lefties are only 6-for-30 (.200) against Skubal so this is another RHP with a negative split. They seem to be everywhere. Righties are hitting .244/.650.
Last year in three starts against the Indians Skubal had a 6.28 ERA but he seems to be a different pitcher this year.
Josh Naylor should be ready to return to the lineup tonight but Jose Ramirez may be out after fouling a ball off his leg last night and having to leave the game. If he can play they might put him at DH with Reyes in right field and Clement at third.
Kwan has 2 hits in his last 21 at-bats and is hitting .185 in May. He needs to get going. Pitchers have figured out how to attack him effectively.
Franmil Reyes has the lowest OPS of any designated hitter in the majors at .552.
I think the keys to getting the Guardians going again are Civale, Reyes, and Kwan. A little more offense from the catching position would help, too, but that may not be realistic.
