2022 Season | Series #15 | Guardians @ Tigers | May 26-29

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Shaping up as another frustrating close loss. Too many of those. I don't want this team to be this deep under 500 so early. There's value in playing for something as deep into a season as possible.

It's a young team, so maybe underperformance should've been expected, but it still sucks
They aren't underperforming, they are learning. This will bear fruit when they are crushing it in 2024.

I just read a column that talked about how opposite field home runs are going the way of the dinosaur. We're on pace for 390 this year after well over 700 last year. The humidors that are now in use everywhere are reducing the distance of fly balls so oppo home runs are a lot harder to hit. This is affecting Franmil.

So today Harold Castro hits an oppo home run - and to left field on top of that. Matt and Rick were talking about how unusual it is to see a lefty hit a home run to left in Comerica, which is the more difficult field to homer. And Castro isn't even a home run hitter! That was his fourth of the year!

It was kind of a freak home run for Castro and Candelario wasn't even supposed to play today but Grossman had to leave after one at-bat. And then the G's are dominated for four innings by a rookie making his second career start who is only pitching due to multiple injuries to their rotation. Just three really wierd occurrances in the same game.

The G's were 0-for-5 with RISP. Great pitching and defense by Detroit and just enough power.

Great pitching and defense by the Tigers. That rookie Rodriguez may have come in with an ERA over 9.00 but he pitched very well today.

That's the second time Daz Cameron has turned a loss into a win with a spectacular catch, both times against Rosario.

Tough break that Grossman got hurt and they had to bring in Candelario, who hit the game winning HR.

That was a very impressive at-bat by O-Gon in the 9th against a guy throwing 99 on the outside corner. But on the 8th pitch Soto came inside and hit 101. Gotta hand it to him.

Like I said upthread, the Tigers have one strength - their bullpen. You have to beat their starter. The G's got a break when Rodriguez had to leave after four innings, but the Tigers' bullpen was up to the task.

Straw is not a good hitter. We'll be better off when we find a better leadoff hitter. But I'm liking the Ramirez/Miller/Naylor/OGon/Gimenez middle of the order. And I think Maile should be starting over Hedges. The difference in offense is significant and I haven't noticed any problems with Maile's defense.
Luke threw out a runner at second today—something Hedges hasn’t done lately.

Very disappointing trip to Motown. They (I say again) desperately need a legit bat to put between Jose and Naylor. While some folks of course are going, rightfully, to be off limits, I hope they're willing to deal serious talent for the right bat if one comes available.
