There's even more to it.
With Minnesotas just completed shutout loss to Detroit, we are five games back, having played six less games.
Outside of the division, Minnesota has played the grand total of eight games vs teams with winning records. Kinda hard to believe, huh? They have won one of those games.
We have played fifteen games outside the division vs teams with winning records. We are 5-10 in those games.
The lead the Twins have at the moment is almost entirely due to the difference in schedules.
There is a generally false narrative on this forum that the Twins...and to some extent, the White Sox...are far superior teams and that the Guardians can't possibly contend with the present roster, and so they shouldn't even try. But in spite of a five game deficit, they are competing for the division pretty well.
There are other false narratives.
Minnesotas pitching, esp the rotation, is superior to ours, and the main reason ours has looked better lately is because of the weak competition...as if shutting down any MLB offense is automatic.
Over our last fifteen games, we have given up 2.8 runs per game. Five of those games were vs Houston and Minnesota, the rest vs KC, Detroit, and Cinci.
Over the last fifteen games, all against KC, Detroit, and Oakland, the Twins have given up 4.13 runs per game.
Our pitching is going in one direction. Minnesotas is going in another.
