The Guardians hit the road for four games in three days against the Tigers, who they have only played five times this season despite the fact that we're just five games from the halfway point. The Tigers lead the series 3-2 despite having scored just 12 runs in 5 games. The G's have lost 4-2, 4-3, and 2-1. A little offense would go a long way against this team as the Tigers have only scored more than two runs twice.
The Tigers are last in baseball in scoring at 3.00 runs per game. They are especially bad against right-handed pitching with a .213/.587 line. Three of our four starters this series are right-handed.
In terms of team earned run average they're somewhat better, ranking 21st, but still below average.
The Tigers have announced three of the four starters they will use in this series. One of them is making his major league debut while the other two each have one win this season. We will pitch Plesac, Pilkington, Quantrill, and Bieber, so we should have a significant starting pitcher advantage in all but one game. Also, thanks to Tristan McKenzie going seven innings against the Yankees yesterday our bullpen is ready to go with the exception of Anthony Gose who is on IR.
That being said the Tigers are 19-24 at home against 11-23 on the road, so they've been much more competitive at home.
Zach Plesac goes in the opener today against 26-year-old Garrett Hill, making his first major league appearance. Hill has a 3.23 ERA in AAA this year. He's right-handed, which is to our advantage.
Konnor "Pickles" Pilkington goes in the second game against Alex Faedo, 1-4, 4.84. Faedo, also right-handed, has started 10 games and allowed 14 runs in his last three starts, the longest of which was 4.1 innings. This could be a fairly high scoring game and will be the Tigers best chance for a win, on paper anyway.
Tomorrow Quantrill goes against an unannounced starter. That could be a bullpen game or they could bring up a minor leaguer.
If the Guardians can get to Hill early in Game 1 and also run Faedo after 3-4 innings in the nightcap, they can burn out the Tigers bullpen today and leave them in a bad situation tomorrow where they have no starter and the bullpen is fried. Then they get Bieber on Wednesday.
I don't want to get too overconfident against a team we are 2-3 against and playing on the road, but their offense is the worst in baseball and we are in much, much better shape for starting pitching. They could end up with two starters making their big league debuts this series.
Zach Plesac is killing it, having allowed 8 runs in his last 6 starts. He has quietly turned his season around and has been our best starter over the last five weeks. This will be his first look at the Tigers this season.
Pilkington has not been particularly effective as a starter. Opponents are hitting .306/.828 against him when he starts. The Tigers hit lefties better than righties. With runners on base opponents are hitting an incredible .339 against Pickles, so that is the first thing he needs to fix if he's going to pitch up here.
