2022 Season Series #34 | Astros @ Guardians | August 4-7, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We have needed to make a lot of moves to bring up warm bodies that can pitch, because we began our 40 man with only 17 pitchers.

And many of those fringe guys fans now shrug about were once highly valued prospects.
...bringing up warm bodies to pitch is an over simplification.. but having only 17 coupled with these alleged fringe prospects....

Assuming the definition of a fringe prospect is a guy with some talent but how that translates to the highest level of baseball is mostly unknown... if it is anything other than unknown talent, then who really knows what the Guardians have???...

...makes for a tighter 40 man and 26 man roster management problem.. It doesn't matter if there are 17 or 27.. if a guy can't pitch effectively.. The limited spaces also apply towards position players.. Without knowing what Nolan Jones can do.. or Will Benson.. or Steven Kwan.. or Alex Call.. or.. or.. or.. they just as easily could have been subjected to rosterbation machinations.. with some lost..

Some should be lost.. more than a few have been the subject of proposed trades.. or "a lot of moves".. on that we can all agree...

So rather than option Reyes to AAA a month or two ago, we wait till it’s too late and DFA him…
?

What are you talking about? How does the timing have anything to do with his DFA?

Reyes was an established vet. He gets a long leash. Clearly something happened, and he made the situation untenable. Sending him down earlier pisses a lot of people off and still winds up with the same result.

He was in AAA on a rehab assignment less than 7 weeks ago.

As @BimboColesHair has said before, there’s not a single organization that would have demoted a guy with Franmil’s track record much earlier than when we did.

Also, sounds like there’s far more to the DFA than continued struggled.

Sending him down pisses people off. Wouldn’t want to do that at the expense of trying to win games…

I think what people mean by sending him down earlier is that the vets feel that they should have a longer leash over a rookie due to their experience. If you send Reyes down after a bad month or two (even though it went into last year), it is not just Reyes who is pissed but other vets on the team and people from other teams thinking if this is how you treat vets, we want no part of it. Vets need to feel that if they have a bad month that they are not looking over their shoulder on when they will be sent down (especially if they just need to be down for a few weeks to avoid accruing the next full year of service time for FA or arb). It is a fine line of what a player should work through and what a player needs some time in the minors to be readjusted.

I don’t think @Out of the Rafters at the Q is properly articulating why he got a longer leash.

Guys with track records get longer leashes because they almost always break out of it and return to form.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Reyes hit 40 HR next year and continue his successful career. It’ll be frustrating, but it also seems that his designation for assignment was not entirely related to his struggles.
