2022 Season | Series #36 | Guardians @ Jays | Aug. 12-14, 2022

So are we facing the Twins at home or on the road in the first game of the first round of the playoffs?

You know it’s going to happen. 162 games isn’t enough to determine who moves on so we’ll play three more. It’s merely another opportunity for the universe to make us look silly.

At the moment, we have the home field in round one vs either Tampa or Minnesota as of today...

Rubber game tomorrow as Bieber goes against RHP Kevin Gausman, 8-8, 2.91. Gausman is in his 10th season at age 31 and is on his fifth team. His career record is 72-80, 3.92. His last two seasons he's really upped his game with ERA's a full run lower than his career average.

Gausman went six innings against the G's in May, allowing one run. His home ERA is 4.19 against 1.83 on the road. Hopefully that holds true on Sunday. He has a strong reverse split as righties are hitting .294 as opposed to .240 for lefties.

In his last two starts he pitched 14 innings allowing 7 hits, no runs, 1 walk, and 15 K's. He's on a roll at the moment, but both those games were on the road. In his last home start he gave up 5 runs in 4.2 innings, so we'll see which pitcher we get.

The Jays have scored two runs in 17 innings against the Guardians so hopefully Beebs can keep that going. It's really impressive since the Jays are the 5th highest scoring team in baseball.

Bieber has allowed 3 runs in his last 3 starts, so this is a matchup of two very hot pitchers. Bieber got blown away by the Jays in May, allowing 7 runs in 3.1 innings, which I believe was the worst start of his career by far. I'm sure he'll be looking for some payback tomorrow.

Until today that was the only game the G's lost to Toronto this year.

Everything points to another close, low-scoring game tomorrow. In those games I believe the team that can hit home runs has the advantage. We saw that play out today.

I thought the Jays' batting order today was interesting. First of all, they put their best hitters at the top to put max pressure on McKenzie right away and make sure their best hitters got the most plate appearances.

Gurriel, who has the highest batting average in baseball since June 1 at .353 led off. Vlad hit second and Kirk third with Hernandez fourth. Also, they had eight right-handed hitters despite the G's starting a right-hander. But McKenzie has been more successful against lefties so they ignored conventional wisdom and stacked the lineup with right-handed hitters.

McKenzie still held them to two runs, but they made him work hard. He only had three K's in 6.2 innings. He wasn't getting the swings and misses he usually gets. His strikeout rate is much higher against lefties.

I've been wondering when teams would start going against the grain when facing pitchers with reverse splits. I saw that today. Bieber is also much better against lefties (.570 OPS) than righties (.662) so we may see the same lineup tomorrow.

The strategy you saw today, is how the Rays do their lineup for the most part. They always put the hottest guys at the top of the lineup for the most part...

Speaking of best hitters at the top, when does Andres get into the 2-4 spots?

Kwan/Hosey/Andres/Rosario/Naylor

Andres on paper is a better 6ish hole type since he doesn't take walks and doesn't have a ton of power. In our lineup though I am not against him moving up though...

So who are we going to start for the doubleheader tomorrow? Civale and who? Not Pilkington again is it?

Curry, Bettenfield would be better options. And no I don't give a flying flip about service time or 40-man issues.
