2022 Season | Series #49 | Rays @ Guardians | Sep. 27-29, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
OK, let's move along. Nothing to see here. Same old thing all season. Guardians helpless against the lefty starter and then get to the bullpen late for a win in their last at-bat. Only difference is Stephan finished instead of Clase and he made it more dramatic but otherwise it's just another typical Guardian win. So move along, folks, nothing to see here.

Sorry, thought of this character throughout the entirety of reading your post

I've never liked him all season to be sincere in a high leverage role...

To me, he is average without that split... His fastball is nice and all, but the numbers don't support it being good by itself. If what you are saying is he going to be effective when/if the season gets colder/into November?

But you can't just say "he's average without his split" when his splitter is one of the most effective splitters in all of baseball.

Cal Quantrill on tonight's win over Tampa Bay:

“It’s not about proving we can beat them. It comes back to proving that we can continue to play the game the way we want to play it. If we match up against them (in the postseason), great. If it’s the Mariners, great. Whoever it ends up being, fine. I think we’re ready. We’ve shown we can play good baseball in meaningful games. We’ve done it for the last month.”

We all have our opinions, but for me the 90's teams were much more enjoyable to watch offensively while these recent teams have a big edge in the pitching department.
Not sure I was really picking one over the other. I just really enjoy the putting the ball in play and keeping constant pressure on the defense game. And never mind the fact this team isn't supposed to be doing this. This was a 3rd or 4th place AL Central team and they have just said fuck that. The exciting thing to me is they are just scratching the surface of what they are going to eventually do in my opinion.

And don't get me wrong, I loved those 90's teams. It was just a different type of team.

a couple weeks ago I was thinking just get us through that last game with the rays with a lead of a game or two and then we can exhale and things will be okay what with the 6 we would have v kc - and I was right!

A lead of a game or two, or 11…

I think they sneak him [Bo Naylor] on for the Royals series.
@DJTJ

And Bo is on the taxi squad and up in Cleveland.

The Mets have promoted young Francisco Alvarez up to their major league club. This promotion appears to be very similar to what could be a promotion of Bo Naylor onto the Guardians squad.. perhaps, for the one or two of the Royals games starting tonight..

Interesting that both clubs are promoting early 20 something catchers.. (they are less than 14 months apart in age) and have similar numbers in their 2022 results..

Bo Naylor: .263/.392/.888
52 games @ AA 170 AB's 46 Hits, 20 were XBH's, 45 walks 46 K's .271/.427/.898
66 games @ AAA 245 AB's 63 Hits, 31 were XBH's, 37 walks 75 K's .257/.366/.880

Francisco Alvarez. .260/.374/.885
67 games @ AA 253 AB's 70 Hits, 34 were XBH's, 36 walks 71 K's .277/.368/.921
45 games @ AAA 158 AB's 37 Hits, 15 were XBH's, 34 walks 52 K's .234/.382/.825

Spooky how close these two guys are... offensively.. Bo is a little better on the basepaths. Alvarez is a little worse against better pitching.. Defensively.. Alvarez & Naylor are almost indistinguishable.. They're both showing the ability to stay behind the dish at the highest levels as an every day back stop. Alvarez may be a little better blocking pitches.. Naylor may be a little better calling a game..

Should be interesting to see how they do going forward..

Thoughts...

This posting may be better placed in a different thread.. it just started here with the @DJTJ posting about Bo Naylor being on the "taxi squad" w/ @BimboColesHair response about being sneaky..

There, I fixed the name spelling lol

I would think if you packaged those two together, I would think you could get a solid return... You aren't getting what you want for it though. Why would a team send an established SP of any age for a rental SS, who's specialty is getting hits and nothing more. I would personally target a LHRP who could be of use in high leverage situations plus as many 21/22 signees/draftees with upside since they aren't near Rule 5 eligible... Though Cleveland isn't east to predict since they don't go by the normal rules lol
Good point on the contract issue

In the 8th inning against a fellow playoff team…

A rookie pinch hits and singles.

He’s knocked in by another rookie who doubles to tie the game.

That second rookie is knocked in by a third rookie who singles to put the Guardians on top for good.

Teams who are 88-68 with 6 games to go are not supposed to get three hits by rookies in the 8th inning to win a game.

This team does.

Great move by Tito to pinch hit Will Brennan for Hedges leading off the 8th.

Oscar swung at a pitch that almost hit him in the stomach and got the game-winning single thanks to Choi not being able to come up with it cleanly.

The Rays are now behind Seattle by a half-game and we would play them if the season ended today. Now the Rays have six road games in Houston and Boston while the M's are playing the A's and Tigers. I'd say there's an 80% or greater chance we get the Rays.

The way the Rays rotation is set up they would start Kluber, Springs, and Rasmussen against us. Rasmussen is 10-7, 2.85. Springs just shut us out for six innings. Two evenly matched teams, IMO.

I don't disagree with anything you said here.
