The regular season ends the way it started - against the Kansas City Royals, only this time the games are in Cleveland. The Royals are coming off another lost season at 63-93. Their road record is abysmal; 24-51, and they're 5-8 against the Guardians. This will be a six-game series.
These games are meaningless for both teams as the G's are locked into the #3 seed while the Royals are playing out the string. I don't know if they will be sitting some of their starters to get a look at younger players or what.
Brady Singer, who is their ace, starts tonight against Aaron Civale. Singer is 10-4 on a team that is 30 games under .500 so that is really impressive. His ERA the last three months are 2.05, 2.92, and 1.38 in four September starts. The Guardians got 9 hits and 3 runs off him in 6 innings on Sep. 5 and for the season are hitting .310/.770 against him. Kwan is 4-for-7, Jose 6-for-13, and Straw 6-for-11 against Singer. For some reason the Guardians have had more success against him than other teams, but he is on a roll at the moment having allowed just one earned run over his last 20 innings.
Civale held the Royals to one run in seven innings in his only start against them on July 8. Since coming back from missing nearly a month he has allowed four runs in 10 innings.
The Royals starters for the last five games of this series have combined for 14 wins this season. Four of the five have ERA's of 4.96 or higher; the exception is Zach Greinke at 4-9, 3.98.
After tonight this should be a series where the Guardians score some runs. They're at home, there's no pressure, and they will be facing some very suspect starting pitchers. The Royals' bullpen is fourth worst in the majors in xFIP since the All-Star break. I'll be disappointed if the Guardians don't score at least 25 runs in the last five games.
Steven Kwan will pass Kenny Lofton for most hits by a rookie. They are tied at the moment.
Tito will be getting his regulars the right amount of work and rest to prepare them for the playoffs. This series ends on Wednesday and the wild card round starts Friday, so there is just one day off.
