2022 Vent Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Falcons had the ball 11 times today, two were end of half kneel downs.

So 9 real possessions and they scored 5 times (2 TD, 3 FG).

In week 1 they had 13 possessions and scored 6 times (2 TD, 4 FG)
In week 2 they had 9 possessions and scored 4 times (3 TD, 1 FG)
In week 3 they had 9 possessions and scored 5 times (3 TD, 2 FG)

Compare that to the Browns...

Week 1: 11 possessions, 6 scores (2 TD, 4 FG),
Week 2: 9 possessions, 5 scores (4 TD, 1 FG)
Week 3: 10 possessions, 4 scores (3 TD, 1 FG)
Week 4: 10 possessions, 4 scores (2 TD, 2 FG)
I agree that the offense was disappointing.

Specifically the interior of the offensive line really let us down. Teller had two massive penalties that cost us points. Grady Jarrett made two huge plays that cost us points.

On the bright side, I don't expect Teller or Bitonio to let us down on a weekly basis--so that's easily fixable. It's just disappointing that it resulted in a loss this week.

Explain to me how you can excuse this play in a crucial situation and say the defense performed well enough? Browns have three time outs, 2nd and long, ATL on their own 10.

Blown coverage plus a personal foul, but the defense isn’t to blame?

Everyone gets blame during a loss, but the defense once again shit the bed at the end. This is the third time in four games the defense has failed at the end of the game when it mattered. Two times we lost, the other time York bailed them out with a 58 yard FG.

Let's dissect this play.

What do you think the problem is? I'm pretty confident that I can see what happened here, even without the all-22.

I’m sure it was once again a “communication problem” that caused a guy to be wide open. Probably a number of guys out of position. Looks like Ward’s fault to be honest. Everyone appears to be playing zone except him, who’s running man on London and pressing him at the line for whatever reason.

Really, the worst part of it was the penalty. It turned a 42 yard play into a 57 yard play and almost immediately put them in FG range.

The Falcons had the football 9 times and scored touchdowns on two possessions. I'm not sure what else you can really ask for out of an NFL defense in 2022.

I have been plenty critical of Woods at times this year, but the defense played well enough to win.
Giving credit to the defense for The goal line stand we had is mighty generous

Everyone in that stadium except the falcons coach knew we couldn’t stop 4 straight runs. Counting that drive as a success is obscuring the true picture. That was another horrible drive that we got bailed out on

Almost 99% sure the issue was Phillips

I think we’re just going to be a team that plays up and down to competition because we rely on the run game and don’t have the weapons offensively to put up points in a hurry and put games away (hoping Watson resolves this). We control the clock but can’t finish people off due to this limitation and because our defense from a scheme standpoint and an execution standpoint is going to keep other teams in the game (we’ve controlled the ball in all four games, for a total clock differential of +46 minutes over 4 games…).

This isn’t an indictment on Stefanski or Woods… we’re just in a hard spot in that we’re a little limited on both sides of the ball in a league that is unforgiving. I catch myself constantly allowing the fact that we could win games to mean that we should win every game.

We’d have put all four of these games away handily if we could step on a throat offensively. The defense isn’t pleasant to watch… but it’s good enough if our margin of error wasn’t razor thin.

ETA: I’ll admit the foot was on the throat against the jets.

You think it’s the LB’s fault a WR crossed the formation and caught the ball 20 yards downfield? that’s a really deep drop to ask an LB to cover. It’s either Ward or Harrison, or potentially Newsome if he was supposed to run with the WR, but it looked like zone was canned.

What a sad sad football team. Losers continue to find ways to lose.

I think Jacob Phillips has that zone and didn't realize a receiver ran a deep crosser from the opposite side of the field behind him. He never turned his head that way and was probably watching Mariota because of the running ability.

I have lots of issues with our defense and want Woods gone, but I don't think this is an example of anything more than a defensive line not getting home and a young linebacker messing up in coverage.

Yes.

Look at Delpit and Phillips. They are responsible for the second level on this zone coverage.

Honestly don’t care either way. I’m not the one to make corrections. The point was you can’t absolve the defense of blame when they completely failed on multiple levels in crunch time. Specifically on this play; blown contain, blown coverage, personal foul.

No.

I am excited to see how @Randolphkeys defends Joe Woods and his archaic way of calling defense.

Didn't watch the game. It was my wife's birthday and I didn't expect a win.

The scheme features a strong presence from the front four, and the Browns don't have the personnel this week.

boooooo I wanted a spicy take.

Spicy take: just hours ago we were talking about wanting Green Bay's defensive coordinator.

They're in overtime against the Bailey Zappe-led Patriots. Giving up 24 (17 after subtracting the pick six) points to that Patriots offense and their third string rookie QB has to feel worse than what transpired in Atlanta today.
