2023-2024 Cleveland Guardians Offseason Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Things that I'm excited to see in 24:
1. Full season of Bo
2. Manzardo in the lineup
3. Bibee, Williams and Allen from the get go
4. Josh coming into camp a bit slimmer and lighter on his feet so he can play some OF
5. DeLauter making his debut at some point
6. Less playing time for Straw
7. Seeing if Rodriguez's AAA numbers can translate
8. Cantillo making his debut
9. Seeing if Espino can finally have a healthy season
10. Arias prove all the doubters wrong or replaced with Brito(Gimenez to SS).

Why is the board the only place I read about Naylor playing in the OF? Pretty sure it’s been said there’s no chance of it

That has not been said. In fact, the idea of it has been mentioned. A healthy, fit Josh Naylor is actually a passable OFer. I don't think it is a likely scenario though. Only a possibility if the other options don't look promising.

I think it's a possibility at this time and the idea of it will be determined by Josh's offseason work and who is added to the roster throughout the offseason. If they get an OFer then Josh playing OF is probably off the table. If they get the type of bat they need and he is a 1B or DH then I believe it could be an option. Again, how Josh takes care of himself this offseason could influence the path they take. That's all I'm saying.

You aren't wrong in the fact, we need to keep all options open, but it's extremely unlikely Naylor will play OF again in normal, non-injury circumstances in my mind...

I don't even know if the idea isn't "ideal". So much of it depends on how Josh looks when he comes to camp. He was carrying at least 25lbs of extra weight. If he comes to camp looking more like his brother then I believe he could play a good OF. I think many underplay Josh's athleticism and it's that very athleticism that allows him to play with the extra weight.

If there is no OF acquired.. the likelihood is Laureano, Arias and Brennan along with Kwan and Straw will form the Guardians outfield group for the 2024 season.. There are enough AB's to hide the difficulties with LHP's by Arias & he should *(and imho, will ) make them go away. Arias has the physicality and ability to play anywhere on the diamond save for catcher. Kwan/Laureano/Straw/Brennan make four guys who can play CF.. ALL of the OF's can play LF, however, at the end of the day, it's Kwan's spot. Also, with an immediate replacement in the form of either Tena or Rocchio at SS, this would put the best group team of players on the diamond going forward.

IOW..
-no Josh Naylor in the OF..
-no movement of Gimenez back to SS

..waiting in the wings will be DeLauter & Valera... who's arrival cannot be soon enough..

Thoughts?

FYI- the QO for this year was over $20M & all 7 players turned it down.

With how the QO is calculated I fully expect the QO to remain over $20M for the next 5 years

Not to be a but-insky.. but the number of guys eligible for and not receiving a QO seems to be on the rise.. That is.. they didn't have a chance to accept a QO as it was never offered.. Sort of a feast or famine situation.. I would presume that if a player is near the end of his career and knows they won't be offered a multi-year deal will be the only way a QO will be accepted going forward..

Fair point a la Michael Brantley.

Someone earlier in the thread questioned extending a QO to Bieber at 17M after the season so I was the actual butinsky pointing out the current QO value.

Color me unimpressed if we go into 24 without some sort of upgrade in RF. Unless Ramon finds his power stroke back, it would make for another long season of less than ideal power/hitting OFers, especially if Straw is getting more than 30 or 40 starts out there.

If Naylor doesn’t play 2 or more games in RF. He should be perma-banned.
Josh Naylor's dream of playing RF should not be extinguished by the ghost of Ernie Clement.

During the offseason Josh needs to lose 20-25 pounds to get to his svelte stature of 2021. Actually, so do I. :chuckle:

If he is physically able Josh could easily play RF one game every fortnight if Manzardo is at 1B to give Jose or another regular a day off from the field. Even 8-12 games during the season adds to roster flexibility.
