2023-24 Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It does appear a Mitchell crisis is looming. Replacing the Sexton crisis. Mitchell probably would be better off the bench like Sexton. But that is never happening. The Cavs obsession with these no d scorers is disturbing and costly.
What “scorers” in the league really play D anyways?

PG isn’t the defender he used to be, Jrue isn’t really a scorer, Leonard was lost a step on D as well.

Mitchell is an All NBA player. If JBB can't make it work, you hire a new coach. If the new coach can't make it work, you trade Mitchell. You don't do either after Mitchell and Garland shared the court for all of 4 games this season. If you get 40 games in, and the offense is still sputtering, then you have some decisions to make.

Windhorst reported that if the Cavs are still struggling after 20-25 games he expects to see a change on the sideline. He also reported that there have been rumblings from the locker room that some Cavs players are frustrated with JBB and his system/adjustments or lack there of.
I was at the game in Sac and I could see DM’s body language (which wasn’t good) when he was pointing to the court while talking to JBB during FT attempts. So there IS something to Windy’s reporting.

I personally would've fired him after the Knicks series so you didn't end up in a situation where you needed to replace him mid-season with the better candidates already getting hired by other teams.

There aren't a lot of examples of in-season coaching changes working out. Also, getting buy-in from Mitchell on a new hire would've been valuable as Mitchell may have to adjust in order to get the offense operating to its full potential.

In any event, I won't be upset if we're having the same issues 25 games in and he gets the axe. It just seems like we've made the situation more difficult than it needed to be.

Another thought I've been having is how often the Celtics struggled in the first half of the season only to work through it, turn it around in the second half of the season, and go on a deep run in the playoffs. If the Cavs are convinced JBB is part of the problem, they should cut him loose, but there are some aspects the players will have to figure out and work through themselves regardless of who's on the sidelines.

the "rumblings from the locker room" is a huge deal if true. Once players start losing confidence in their coach it rarely reverses course. The NBA is a player's league. Lose the players, or even just the key players, and you are toast.

Maybe more.

Maybe a lot less.

The Cavs don’t have the right coach, and it’s been pretty clear for a while. Hopefully it gets bad enough soon to convince Gilbert and Altman that it’s time to make a change. The longer this drags out, the more damage it does.
