Re: Espino

If/when he starts mowing down minor league hitters again, he BETTER be fast tracked into the majors ASAP. If there's only a limited amount of pitches in that body, might as well put them to good use.

Adding Espino late in the season to the bullpen group to spell/ assist Clase & others would be a very interesting & impactful move for the '23 team..

Definitely, I actually saw that as a remote possibility in 2022 before he was shut down.

I personally never did... They had to figure out their other arms first... Not a guy who just got to AA...

We are not gonna see Espino pitch in Cleveland this year.

An anterior capsule tear is extremely rare, esp for a young pitcher. I'm sure there have been more, but I can only find five, and four of them happened to pitchers in their 30s. The most famous was Johann Santana, who ended up tearing his twice. The only youngster I could find was Julio Urias, who was 20.

A few findings...

Rest never worked, and all needed surgery. The quickest time between surgery and beginning a rehab assignment was thirteen months.

In Urias' case, he was injured in June and began a rehab assignment in July of the next season. That year he pitched about 18 innings. The next season he threw about 80 innings out of the pen.

Thats the bad news.

The good news is that he has done very well since then, and his velocity post surgery was actually somewhat higher.

But if you use Urias' timeline as a rough guide, it would be 2025 before you could expect to see Espino as a member of the rotation.

"...Worst case scenario is if you get in there (inside the shoulder) and realize that there’s a structure that’s torn or something that you need to repair, whether it’s the capsule or the labrum," Carr said. "That’s a more serious issue that really takes more of a nine- to 12-month recovery process. It could put his season in jeopardy.."

Carr is Dr. James B. Carr II, with the Hospital for Special Surgery, specializes in shoulder ailments.. when discussing the procedure being contemplated on Frankie Montas of the Yankees.

The report that has been stated is that Cleveland's doctors are of the belief that there is a structure that is torn and there is possibly another area that is inflamed.. More and more, it's looks like this could be a lost season for Espino.. but, we won't know until the surgeon gets in there...or there are changes to the MRI's during a prolonged rehabilitation and recovery..

IOW.. wait and hope..
