2023 MLB Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
More importantly, they are now tied with the 1899 Cleveland Spiders at 10-45.
It will take an Herculean effort to finish the season worse than Cleveland's 20-134 record, but is this a chance to get that Spider monkey off our back?

I say yes!

What great milestones did the Spiders achieve in 1899?

A single 2-game winning streak. (Just once did they win back-to-back games.)

114 games under .500.

Longest losing streak: 24 games. (One more than the 1961 Phillies)

Shut out 14 times. (Shit! The Guardians have been shut out 6 times already this year!)

Finished 84 games out of first place.

Road record of 11-101. That's right, 101 losses On The Road. Their attendance was so paltry (like 100 fans per game?) that they played every game
but 8 on the road after July 1st.

9 total wins at home.

Best month was May: 7-19 record. (Guardians far superior so far at 10-14.)

Could not boast a winning record against any MLB team.

Went 1-34 after August.

Hit 12 HR. In 1899. (Dunking on the Spiders!)

Batted .253 as a team. (God, I wish.)

Edit to add: 30 double-headers. Record: 0-19-11, which is actually a far better winning percentage than their single contests. 55% of their wins were achieved while playing a double header!

And 8 more multiple team double headers which I didn't even know was a thing.

Total attendance in 1899: 6,088 paid admissions. So if anybody tells you they saw them play, it's probably a fabrication.

It’s crazy how Rick Manning has been apart of
Cleveland baseball for roughly 125 years.

Unfortunately, I missed seeing that team, although I came close. My great grandparents owned an inn on the 'pike' just south of the Ohio River, across from Cincinnati. We went to visit them over Labor Day weekend. The Spiders played a doubleheader vs the Reds, and I hoped to go.

But there was some kind of county fair nearby. Travelers filled up the inn, and I was put to work. I carried jugs down the hill to the inn all day.

That team was just unlucky. By its pythagoreum, it should have won six more games.

During the 2021-22 offseason, the A’s traded Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman, Gold Glove first baseman Matt Olson and starting pitchers Chris Bassitt and Sean Manaea, reducing their payroll to roughly $48 million, tens of millions less than the year before. They also allowed outfielder Starling Marte to leave via free agency. Then, in August, they traded Frankie Montas and closer Lou Trivino to the New York Yankees. This past offseason, Gold Glove catcher Sean Murphy was also traded.
That is an extraordinary talent drain. Not surprisingly, the team’s record dropped to 60-102 in 2022 with baseball’s lowest payroll. This season, they still have the lowest payroll (just a tad behind the Mets’ $336 million or so), and their record and attendance reflect that.
The team has drawn announced crowds of fewer than 3,000 four times in May. For one three-game series against the Guardians in April, they drew a total of 11,372 fans.IMG_0905.jpeg

Trading that much talent should garner you more top prospects than you know what to do with, but Oakland is not a well ran franchise......clearly.

Every deal the A's made was followed by A's fans asking.. wtf are they doing!!????? Seemingly taking lesser talent than what would otherwise be considered at least fair.. The TS/Ted Stepien/Too Stupid rule needed to be instituted for Mr. Fisher and the A's FO... A travesty, to say the least..

So you mean, we could have had a better package for Murphy and their FO just choose the wrong one??? Thus, it MAY have not been Chris's fault that we got supposedly out bid?
