2023 NBA Season - Around the League

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
And at least in Luka's case, I believe Cleveland has the largest Slovenian population in the US. I remember reading this around draft time
Would not be surprised to find Cleveland ranks high in many Eastern European ethnic communities.. That is part of Clevelands Mojo.. I would also say that Clevelands black and white communities get along (today) better that many other cities I have been in..

Inject this directly into my veins...

This is actually true. Slovenians have been immigrating to Cleveland since the late 1800's. They have even had a Slovenian consulate in Cleveland since before independence in 1990.

Being of Eastern European decent myself, i have followed this a bit.

The 2018 draft is one of those great what ifs. If we hadn't let NJ beat us, if we'd gotten a higher draft pick, would we have been smart enough to take Luka? It would have made it all worth it.

Although as I'm sure people are about to point out, we have a better record than the Mavs right now...but it's also true that the Mavs with Luka have won two playoff series (and played in four) since 2018 while we have won zero and played in one.

My big “what if” is the 2003 draft. We only had a 21% chance at the #1 pick.

I can’t tell you how many nights I lay awake unable to sleep because I can’t figure out who we would have taken at #2. We should probably have a separate thread to discuss this. We wouldn’t have taken Darko because we had Z, but do we take Carmelo, Wade or someone else?

I still to this day cant believe Phx looked at that draft, had Luka's old coach and said, nah we will take the big guy from Arizona. And even more ridiculously, Atl looked at Luka and went, nah we want Trae Young.

Wade went higher in that draft than projected. He was a 7-8 guy. Miami wanted Bosh if I’m not mistaken and he would have been selected there if Toronto didn’t select him, even with Wade on the board.

I still think the Cavs go Melo #2 if they had the 2nd pick. Carmelo fit a position of need with Boozer & Z up front already.

Plus he was dominant in college, a bonafide scorer and they were transitioning into a rebranding as well. Melo was the 2nd most popular name in that draft and I think they go that route over Darko just for the marketing alone.

We would have taken Melo for sure. I think the Pistons only had the confidence/stupidity to pick Darko because they were already a winning team with a secured fan base. Melo had a national rep coming off leading Syracuse to a championship and was a sure thing, the fans would have rebelled if he hadn’t been picked.

He would have done OK in Cleveland too even if nowhere near what Lebron eventually did. He actually got the Nuggets to the playoffs his first year, unlike Lebron with the Cavs - the only major additions to their team were Melo and Andre Miller but they actually got a winning record and a playoff spot. He would have scored a ton and probably gotten us an early playoff exit or two before leaving to NYC at the first opportunity

I actually think the Pistons made the right move by making the wrong one. If Darko didn't bust, no Sheed trade. If they take Melo, that Pistons yeam is never assembled and Prince probably gets traded for Charlie Bell and a second

Luka putting a little more energy into this game as opposed to his lazy and pathetic effort last Sunday

This narrative that Anthony Edwards is a Michael Jordan clone is hilarious. He’s about 3 inches shorter, nowhere near the same post game…. However he is wearing the same kinda leg sleeve and arm band but that’s it…

Getting more Joe Johnson vibes….
