2023 Offseason Potential Targets (FA and Trades)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm looking forward to see which team is ready to tear it all down and tank. The best players on the trade market came from the Jazz and Spurs as they started "Wanking for Wemby." Who is going to tear it all down this year?

For the sake of a scenario to build off like @Smooth :

Re-sign LeVert - Obvious since he wants to be here and he didn't choke in the playoffs.

Trade - Cedi, Rubio 2nd rounder and Diop's rights for Kuzma - Wizards are ready to tank, Cavs retain Bird Rights. He stays on the player option and then the Cavs ink him to a nine figure long-term extension. Deni Avdija is perfect for our needs but I don't think we can get him.

MLE - Gary Trent Jr. - We know the interest has been mutual before, and Nurse is out in Toronto.

BAE - Drew Eubanks - Emerged last year after development in the Spurs G League organization.

Trent will get more then the MLE. His Player Option is worth 18.75 M vs 10 M MLE. He certainly isn't walking away from his PO unless he thinks he's getting more then that on the open market.

just me thinking of wing players who might fit and are attainable:
- dillon brooks (if his value continues to crash, taking a gamble using the MLE is worth it)
- kenyon martin jr
- torrey craig
- keita bates-diop
- tj warren
Kenyon Martin Jr is a RFA and Rockets aren’t letting him go. That kid’s got potential. I wanted the Cavs to draft him in the second round that year but they passed him up.

Rockets are very intriguing as a trade partner. My worry is that the Cavs must prioritize spacing the floor. While Martin has an incredible efg%, he isn't a gravity shooter. The player on their roster I've always liked is LeVert's high school teammate JaeSean Tate. He's also not a gravity outside presence but he plays a nice all around game and doesn't deserve to waste his career in Houston.

Good point. I just threw out one scenario. The Kuzma P.O. opt-in and then trade likely has some issues as well. As I introduced initially I don't think the landscape has revealed itself yet. Altman tends to wait to make his move.

I like Tate but he’s another “6’5” SF….we already have that in Okoro.

A guy I'd like to target is Garrison Matthews from the Hawks. Pure shooter who shows some flashes of athleticism. 6'6" SG who is a career 37% 3pt shooter. Between Houston and Atlanta last year he was putting up 12.7 3PA per 100. Career 3pt attempt rate of .848, which would by far be higher than any player currently on the Cavs.

Atlanta traded for him at the deadline last year and he only played 9 games, averaged 9 mpg, and collected a bunch of DNPs. He has two years left at $2M per. Seems like he could be had for pretty cheap. Has played on shitty teams his whole career, so maybe he's one of those guys that flourish on a team with a better environment and well-defined role.

And now some highlights to make him look like an All-Star:

Hes a good motion shooter but I think there were concerns about what else he could do (playmaker, defend). Would love him here but I doubt he gets off the bench with jbb at coach

Taking a gauge for what people deem a successful offseason..

If the Cavs—
- Re-LeVert
- Give full MLE to Josh Richardson
- Give full BAE to Thomas Bryant
- Trade for Royce O’Neale (say Cedi, multiple 2nds and Travers)

Would you deem that successful?

I think that would be in the realm of more realistic offseason possibilities but we also know this offseason may be mired in player movement so some things that don’t look available may be actually available..

Hmm not for me to be honest.

I understand that it's going to be harder and things obviously won't all break like we propose in fantasy, but if thats the scenario we are coming away with I'd be a little underwhelmed to meh.

And angry obviously because of trading away Travers. That's a no-no.

For me a successful off-season would be if the following few things happened:

1) Re-sign LeVert, or S&T him for a legit movement shooter SG, or an above average SF that can shoot and defend. Although I prefer to re-sign him for his ball handling capabilities.

2) Get a shooting back up big: via either MLE (Reid or Lyles preferably, or Grant Williams/PJ), or BAE (Saric, Bryant or Eubanks), or I guess trade if nothing else (Bamba).

3) Acquire a legitimate 3&D SF: either via a non-JA trade (O'Neale, RoCo, Prince, Kuzma I guess, well not sure who else could be available, or MLE if it's still available (Strus, Oubre, Craig).

4) Acquire another shooter on the cheap: preferably one with size (Watanabe, RoCo), but if not, than a SG will do too (Garrison Matthews is a great shout, Malik Beasley?, bringing back Green).

5) Think about the backup PG spot: if Rubio looks healthy great, then I'm fine with Neto or a shooting vet. If he's not ready, we should look for someone more sustainable.

Well thinking about your post above, it's kind of the same lol. I guess it would matter to me a lot what level of player we get from each one of those categories above.

Houston on the other hand is getting everybody. Even the ones they probably don’t want

Acquire a legitimate 3 and D SF. Sounds ideal. But why mention Kuzma? He has spent the majority of his career at PF. Doesn't play defense. And despite taking a lot of shots isn't actually good at shooting. He's a modern day Al Harrington. I have no idea why people think he can solve any issues for this team.

You are correct that he plays a lot of PF, but he would be a Lauri style 3/4 here. Not sure how much Wizards you have watched and I fully understand why you have probably not...they are boring and not good. But, Kuz is actually very solid on defense these days. I remember watching him bother the hell out of Luka earlier this year and carry the Wiz on offense on the other side in a game without KP or Beal. He isn't a perfect fit, but he is not a bad one at all. Very solid two way starter and a versatile offensive player. I wouldnt mind getting him at all (depending on the cost).

Kuzma is trash. Hard pass.-1.5 DBPM last year. Can't shoot 3s

When a bad team is about to lose an asset and get nothing in return, Altman has a history of taking the call.
