2023 Offseason Potential Targets (FA and Trades)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hmm not for me to be honest.

I understand that it's going to be harder and things obviously won't all break like we propose in fantasy, but if thats the scenario we are coming away with I'd be a little underwhelmed to meh.

And angry obviously because of trading away Travers. That's a no-no.

For me a successful off-season would be if the following few things happened:

1) Re-sign LeVert, or S&T him for a legit movement shooter SG, or an above average SF that can shoot and defend. Although I prefer to re-sign him for his ball handling capabilities.

2) Get a shooting back up big: via either MLE (Reid or Lyles preferably, or Grant Williams/PJ), or BAE (Saric, Bryant or Eubanks), or I guess trade if nothing else (Bamba).

3) Acquire a legitimate 3&D SF: either via a non-JA trade (O'Neale, RoCo, Prince, Kuzma I guess, well not sure who else could be available, or MLE if it's still available (Strus, Oubre, Craig).

4) Acquire another shooter on the cheap: preferably one with size (Watanabe, RoCo), but if not, than a SG will do too (Garrison Matthews is a great shout, Malik Beasley?, bringing back Green).

5) Think about the backup PG spot: if Rubio looks healthy great, then I'm fine with Neto or a shooting vet. If he's not ready, we should look for someone more sustainable.

Well thinking about your post above, it's kind of the same lol. I guess it would matter to me a lot what level of player we get from each one of those categories above.

In terms of PG, I’d love to bring in a younger player that could potentially be here long-term. As a Bobcat I always have a soft spot for Jason Preston. He hasn’t had much chance to play in LA. He’s in the final year of his rookie deal so maybe he could be had for cheap.

I’d be looking for someone like him that could work with Rubio and is tall enough to defend both guard positions. He was a good shooter in college and has played well in the G League, just hasn’t had much opportunity yet as a pro.

**Edit for the sweet G League and garbage time highlight footage

Question to ponder for the day:

If the cost were the same, would you prefer a trade for DFS or Royce O'Neale?

DFS is bigger and better on D. I guess the argument for Royce is that he is good friends with Donovan and a bit better on faster guards?

It's a tricky question.

In both 2020/21 and 2021/22, Finney-Smith looked like the perfect small forward for the rotation. You could trust him to shoot at a high percentage and space the floor on a low usage. You can trust him to rotate onto bigger players defensively. Then last year he lost his shot both in Dallas and in Brooklyn. I saw that he underwent an off-season surgery on the pinky finger of his shooting hand. If that was the problem and he is going to go back to his past shooting percentages, he is an interesting buy low candidate.

O'Neale on the other hand played his best basketball last season. His field goal percentage went down with the changes in supporting cast, but he spaces the floor with some gravity from three He's a clutch performer who makes great decisions, easily the better passer and defender against quick players. His three point shot didn't falter last year, but he did lose playing time after the Dallas trade.

Tough choice! It feels more and more likely that the Cavs are in negotiations with Brooklyn. The one takeaway I have from looking at the Nets situation is that they don't benefit from tanking. They owe Houston an unprotected 2024 first rounder and two other pick swaps afterwards. They need to figure out how to double down and continue to fight for the playoffs in the next three years.

They have so many interesting wings. I would be happy with either of them and try to snag the younger Curry if possible. Im just not sure we have enough without giving up Caris or Okoro

I’d prefer DFS. Had a bit of a down shooting year last year, but I suspect part of that was from losing Brunson.

I would like to have a starting SF that has the size to play the 4 with Mobley or Allen at the 5. If LeVert is the 6th man, he could just come in for Allen and DFS and Mobley bump down.

I’d take either, but I think the added positional flexibility of DFS with our bigs is really important. I also think that Garland, Mitchell, LeVert, DFS, Mobley lineup would be insanely difficult for teams to defend with three creators and four guys that can shoot.

Curry is an unrestricted free agent. I don't even count him in any trade scenarios. Patty Mills is 35 and has an expiring contract, I wonder if he's attractive at all for a Cavs package.

Feels like Okoro will be at the heart of any Nets trade since they need a young shooting guard and we don't have first rounders to package anytime soon.

Wonder what value Okoro has in their eyes. Maybe they could think they'd utilize him better and draw out some more potential?

Maybe him being a dedicated PoA and giving breathing time to Dinwiddie and Bridges on D could be attractive. At least more than their 15th redundant 3&D in Royce.

I prefer O'Neale over DFS but I've seen some video about him guarding guards and it hasn't been good. Really, really good on bigger guys though and fantastic off the ball.

Dallas Mavericks: Jarrett Allen

Cleveland Cavaliers: Tim Hardaway Jr & Mavs 2023 1st rd pick (10th overall)

"Conversations with scouts on the road have indicated a profound lack of enthusiasm for basically any player outside the top two in this year's draft,"

Unless there was a pending Brook Lopez signing or something similar in the bag, this would be pretty bad. We’re trading a starting center for a rotation player and a pick. We’d make this trade, still not have a starting SF, and now need a starting C.

This is about the only JA trade I've seen that I'd consider...and its cause of that #10 pick...

Scouts probably lacked enthusiasm for 2014 Round 2 - pick 41. The Joker.

Nobody is perfect... For example:

“And everyone is talking about an incredible draft class this year (2014). I think it’s just the opposite—I think it’s a poor one myself," Jerry West told Scott Van Pelt and Ryen Rusillo on ESPN Radio. "There are going to be prospects there. But these franchises have really struggled. At one time you could get a branded name; these kids are not branded today. They’re not branded."

The draft was loaded with starters, and also produced five All Stars, a DPOY winner, and two League MVPs.

I remember when the 2011 draft was critiqued as weak/uninspiring. Lol
