Didn't the HR Derby fuck up his swing last time?

He's not even that good at the contest. Naylor would have been a better choice.

Hopefully he’s just taking up a spot and will back out last minute for Big Christmas to step in for him!

If Jose is healthy, I think he’s the type of guy who won’t be overly affected by a derby. He’s too disciplined of a hitter.

What made 2022 bad is that in 2022, he had a torn ligament diagnosis in his hand/thumb in June…. Opted against surgery.

Hit in the derby (with said torn ligament) and had a rough end to the year.

I don’t think the ligament injury was public knowledge until October when he got surgery and everyone was like “that makes sense!” Because he really hit terribly as the year went on.

I was a Braves fan as a kid. I was 10 when that ballgame occurred. I remember seeing the pitching matchup listed in the paper on the day of the game and thinking that it could be a great pitcher’s duel. Incredible

Not sure when "kid" was, but one of the all time greats if not the greatest in Hank was a brave. Not a pitcher, but a guy that made all pitchers shit their pants when he was at the plate. And also a very under rated fielder.

But I will always have a ton of respect for Maddox, what a fantastic pitcher. Braves had some great ones to root for.

Warren Spahn vs. Juan Marichal, 7/2/63. Spahn threw 201 pitches, Marichal 227 as both went the distance in a 16 inning game. Spahn lost 1-0 on a homer by Willie Mays. Spahn was 42 at the time.

If that happened today, both managers would be fired and banned from baseball.

Bob Gibson all day long.

Yes.

I loved that Cardinal team with him, Brock, Cepeda , Maris, Carlton.

Gibson pitched mean and came after each batter with that
intensity.

I remember him doing a book signing at Halle's in Cleveland.

Brock on the bases was fun.

I was a Braves fan from when I was in elementary school till they got rid of Phil Niekro, lol!
Braves had Spahn, Burdette, Bob Buhl on the mound and Aaron, Matthews, Joe Adcock, Del Crandall hitting. Great team. Only World Series win I ever lived through as a fan of either the Braves or Cleveland, but I was too young to notice in ‘57.

Spahn’s manager didn’t even consider taking him out. But Marichal insisted that, if this 42 year old could keep going, he wasn’t going to show up Marichal, who was 25.
