Absolute masterclass by ANT. He violates every rule in the manager’s handbook on how to praise and criticize your people, but those rules are ALWAYS less important than the situation.
Don’t criticize in public - ANT does that.
Surround criticism with praise? He did the reverse.
Hear them out? He wasn’t interested in hearing KAT out.
This video is an awesome example of how you CAN’T manage people the same because they aren’t the same. Lawyers and HR types have wrecked people management. You can’t manage construction workers the same way you manage artists. You have to adjust to the culture (or stay true to your culture if that’s appropriate).
ANT got his messages across. He wasn’t interested in the media or fans at all; he turned it into an opportunity to make his team better. KAT won’t forget that message soon. His teammate called him out for fouling in prior games, but the more important message was the heartfelt value ANT sees in KAT as a basketball player.
KAT then tries to say he was playing defense and ANT ruthlessly shuts him down.
