2025 Season | Series #7 | Guardians @ Pirates | April 18-20, 2025

I guess Nayls is having a decent start considering I've been very please with Manzardo.

You would expect some regression from Naylor to Manzardo...

Though I feel like by the end of the season, they won't be far apart...

Josh is one of month-long slumps away from Manzardo being better statically.

Josh Naylor has the scraggly, patchy facial hair of a 13 year old boy who's too proud of his newly found facial hair to shave it even though it looks terrible.

Kyle Manzardo has the luxurious, silky-smooth moustache of a 90's era ballplayer who had a piece of ass in every city he traveled to.

We certainly upgraded.

Just want to clarify something ... usually new 7th/8th man relievers come in without the game on the line. We remember Avila as a dependable reliever but at first, he was one of the last guys in (only when down by 3 or up by 4 or more). 38 of his 54 appearances last year was when we were down by 3 or more or up by 4 or more. Then we also have Strzelecki, Parsons, Bedee and others rotate through as well. In reality, those who are in the long-man role (like McK) are not coming in the 4th inning because the game is going well. McK doesn't have to be the one who comes in with the game on the line. And, yes Cantillo has had 6 of his 8 games come in in those scrub innings. But, as yesterday showed, he will get slide into tighter spaces as the season goes on (gets use to the stress of the reliever position). Plus, Walters will come up in about 8-10 days is my guess - now 26 days into season and he has to be down for 33 days due to 18 days last season and 15 days gimmie room in 172 for a year of service vs 187 day season. I wouldn't worry about the other 6 guys filling in as Junis does come in when game is on the line in 6th.

??????

They both need to shave. They’re both pathetic attempts at facial hair.

Plus didn’t the club dole 12M to replace Naylor, why are we comparing his production to Manzardo?

Reminder of trend .... (he was also hitting .329 after April 20th, 2024 game ....). Maybe as he turns 28, he can stay healthy for the first time in his career, wish him well. At the end of the day, he wasn't going to be resigned at year-end (if they weren't resigning Kwan with hammies at the $$$ he wanted, they were going to break the bank here). And even with a great first half, the trade value wouldn't have been there as it was to start the season (as Arizona has some hope of a Comp A pick so we settled on locking in Comp B along with an intriguing arm).

I'm making a comment in jest.

Some people get angsty every time the team trades away a productive player, like Josh.

Some people like to compare the production of Manzardo and Naylor directly, even though we brought in Carlos to replace Naylor at 1B.

I'm more concerned that you're daring to blaspheme Manzardo's stache like this. I think this is close to "kills animals for fun" on the "likely to be a serial killer" list.

Answer this one for me, genius. Why did Vogt not use Herrin or Smith instead of Cantillo in the final inning against Pittsburgh?

Because they were both unavailable from being overworked from the previous three days.

And why were those two overworked?

Because Vogt has two arms in his pen that he will not use in non garbage situations unless he’s left with literally no other choice.

When you only have 6 guys you’ll go with in close games, and you play a handful of close games in a row, that’s how you end up pitching Herrin and Clase 3 days in a row in April.

With 26-man rosters allowing 8-man bullpens, there’s basically never a scenario where any pitcher should have to go three days in a row in April for goodness sake. The Guardians had two guys do it this week.
You've answered your own question.

Vogt chose to use Cantillo over the other two, so that nobody would be over worked.

But I have shown you that the work loads have been divided equally, and that Cantillo has been used in a key situation.

Beyond that, I simply can't help you.

There's a difference between "we used Cantillo because we didn't want to overwork Smith and Herrin" and "we used Cantillo because Smith and Herrin were unavailable to pitch because they were already overworked past their limits from the previous four games" - you understand that, right?

Those are not the same thing.

Fwiw.. Vogt's use of Cantillo was further evidence that Joey is gaining in confidence in his ability to get ML hitters out in any situation as well as increased trust by Vogt to use Cantillo in critical situations.. We'll see if that continues to be the case going forward...

Was not this IMO. Cantillo was literally one of only two options available alongside McKenzie.

Sewald, Junis, Gaddis and Clase had already pitched in the game.

Herrin had pitched the previous 3 days and has never in his career thrown 4 days in a row. Smith had pitched the previous 2 days and to the best of my knowledge has never thrown 3 days in a row either. It's safe to say both guys were completely unavailable.

For the Pittsburgh finale.. sure.. Cantillo was one of two men last standing.. but the body of work from Cantillo supports my assertion..

Geesh

According to real live statistics and results, NOBODY is being misused or over used, and NOBODY is being used more than Cantillo.

In fact, Cantillo has the MOST IP of anybody in the pen.

Cantillo has thrown MORE pitches than anybody in the pen.

Cantillo 192
Clase 183
Smith 178
Junis 170
Sewald 146
Gaddis 142
Herrin 126
TMac 123

If you are the guy who throws the most IP and the most pitches, you are hardly being under used.

By CBBI's way of thinking, if there is anybody being overused or abused, it's Cantillo.

not shocking....

The point of @CBBI 's comment was that Cantillo was one of two guys remaining in the pen available to pitch the 10th inning..

..and, as we have now seen, Stix, the last remaining guy, was DFA'd earlier today
