2026 Regular Season Thread

Aren't you just brilliant. Here the major leagues have a dearth of decent catchers, much less good hitting defensive catchers, and every organization in baseball whiffed on what evidently only you saw (and Cleveland ignored) when Huff wasn't protected and no one picked him in the Rule 5 draft. The guy had a .631 OPS last year and is repeating a level. Most players his age improve playing two years at the same level, and that's just what Kody Huff is doing. Nobody is doubting his ability to make a contribution at the major league level eventually, but that's not the question. It's whether it makes any sense at all to chuck the evidently decrepit David Fry overboard now because we believe the callow Kody Huff is ready to make a better contribution than the old man in a contention year. You believe he can step in without the team missing a beat. I don't for a minute believe that. And neither does the team. (Oops, there I go again, making presumptions about the team again, tsk, tsk...)

Man, you act as if Fry is a PH demon and tough out. The reason Vogt picks his spots for him to squeeze out some production is the telling part.

No one would have picked Huff in Rule 5, not even me (OK, maybe SC who's led the Huff bandwagon). There was stuff to like, but nobody can be 100% sure he improves his approach like he did to make it all work. He did. Look at the BB/K improvement.

BTW, the almighty David Fry hit 248 in AA at the same age Huff is today. And again, he didn't have to handle and get to know a whole pitching staff to suppress offense. It's almost like catchers can bloom late and take longer to develop offensively sometimes.

And again pt2., I like and value what Fry brings to the table. And it's just my opinion that Huff is the smarter bet going forward. Of course there's risk involved and I'm not advocating for Fry to get DFA'd.
It's just that the roster squeeze is real and decisions need to be made with foresight. If Fry has value to, say, the Reds or A's, maybe we can get a comp B pick for him or a decent LHRP (kind of a need if Big Sabrowski misses more time).

And hey, if Huff is valued more and they can get that for him, then trade him and keep Fry. I just don't see how there's room for both next year and if you stubbornly keep Fry because of the Kumbaya he brings and the shot he took vs Skubal, you probably lose Huff for next to nothing. And that would be a shame. That's my larger point here.

Look, I'm not saying Huff will magically improve the roster ASAP. He'll struggle too like most rooks do, but (opinion alert) he's been the most consistent bat in the Columbus lineup. He takes smart ABs. He's not the most talented hitter (neither was or is Fry), but he gets the most out of his bat. He can swing for the fences pull side, but also take the cheap oppo singles in key spots. He's a cerebral player and it's evident watching him play. I'll always root and advocate for those to be added to the ML squad (and why I didn't like Fairchild, despite his good looking numbers).

With Ingle apparently not being at the same level defensively as Huff and Bailey, and given how much the Guardians value defense behind the plate, and with reports that Ingle will be getting some time in left field where he also played in college, I can see Ingle in left field next year with Bailey/Duff sharing the catching and Fry continuing in his current role plus dusting off his first baseman's mitt and taking Hoskins' role as well. We all get cake!

I see Kwan getting traded after the season as we always trade veterans one year before they hit free agency. That means Angel is probably the 4th OF if we have Ingle, DeLauter, and Schneemann or Watson as the starters. Hopefully Watson beats out Schneemann as I'm not a fan of Daniel's bat over a full season. I don't think they want Angel in center, for sure not every day, although he's been making diving catches and he just threw out a runner at the plate in left field so maybe they give him another look in center.

Ralphy and Manzo share 1B/DH except when Jose DH's in which case one of them gets a day off. Hedges has to find another team. I suppose Bo gets traded along with Kwan.

Hitters have 20 days for rehab, so ends after June 23rd at latest (if no setbacks)

A few thoughts after perusing the last few days of this thread...

1) The guy who isnt here is automatically better than the guy who is syndrome is still alive and thriving.

Ralphy is better than Manzardo. Genao is better than Rocchio. Huff is better than Fry.

3) Does anybody remember way back when...all the way back to March...when Valera was the sure to be better choice?

4) The best option when you have more players at a position than can be fit on a roster...ranging from presently premier vets to kids with future value...is to trade several of them...

Bailey, Hedges, Bo, Fry, Huff, Cozart, Ingle.

Given the often stated significant value that the FO places on the ability to play multiple positions adequately, the answer is not to trade away the one that is most versatile.

4) If Huff, a R5 survivor, is so valuable as a young catching prospect that can both play defense and hit, he has tremendous trade value...more value than merely a back up to Bailey. Bailey, Huff, and Ingle dont all fit on a 26 man roster, unless one is the 13th position player...even if you dump everyone else. All three of them carry a LOT more value as a trade chip than as the 13th position player. (Hint: Bailey isnt getting traded.)

5) Defenders of Arias still...incredibly...exist. He will not be in this org next year, unless nobody else wants him when he is DFAd.

6) This was addressed partially above, but the fanbase truly doesnt believe that the FO is serious about the value of versatility. Schneemann is the super utility defensive specialist on this team. That is unlikely to change anytime soon.

7) Is there anybody still worried about Jose, Manzardo, or Gaddis?

Track records count, esp when the underlying stats back them up.

Huff was drafted 2022 and was a "R5 survivor" in the offseason 2025/26. Huff is 25.5yo.

Fry was drafted 2018 and was selected to the roster on May 2023 (note: at 27.5yo) so he was a TWO time R5 survivor, what a total bum
