2026 Season | Series #20 | Guardians @ Yankees | June 2-4, 2026

The good news is that the Magic Number is down to 96; since West Sacramento is up to 31 losses. We only need to get to 132 wins!

ChiSox won’t go away. They are only 2.5 back, but coming up, they’ve got: @PHL, vATL, vLAD, and @NYY. That’s quite a gauntlet.

Game 3 preview:

The Guardians try to break out the broom in a matinee starting at 1:35 as Slade Cecconi takes the hill against LHP Carlos Rodon (1-2, 3.32 ERA). The Guardians seem to like hitting in the Big Apple as they have scored 14 runs in the first two games, which were started by Schlittler (1.50 ERA) and Cole (0.00). Not bad, especially since they couldn't score 5 runs in any of their previous 12 games.

Rodon, 33, has a career mark of 94-74 with a 3.73 ERA. He had elbow surgery in October and has only started four games. In his last two starts he was up to 93-95 pitches and allowed 2 runs in 11 innings. He's no easier to hit than before. He has walked 13 batters in 19 innings so he may be nibbling. He's still throwing 45% fastballs at 94 mph, right on his career averages.

Rodon is a lefty but right-handed batters are only 5-for-46 off him (.109) while lefties are 7-for-19 (.368) in small samples. Whatever he throws to right-handed hitters it's working beautifully. Jose has seen him a ton; in 53 career at-bats he's hitting .245/.713 off him. Fry is 3-for-9, Hoskins 3-for-11 with a double and a home run, and Angel is 2-for-6. Our right-handed bats have had some success.

Slade Cecconi is 3-5 with a 5.25 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Opponents are hitting .294/.802 off him. His stuff just isn't good. But in his last five starts his ERA is a respectable 3.46 as he's been improving his pitch mix. However, the opponents were mostly weak hitting teams like KC, Detroit, Boston, Philly, and LAA, all of whom rank in the bottom half of the majors in runs per game.

The third time batters face him they're hitting like Ted Williams at his peak with a slash line of .404/1.287. Vogt should absolutely not let him face Rice, Goldschmidt, and Bellinger a third time, if he even makes it that far without getting chased.

We're playing with house money now because we already won the series. The Guardians are swinging the bats well and they are 15-5 against lefty starters this year so maybe they get 4-5 runs off Rodon like they did against Schlittler and Cole.

If Cecconi only makes it through 3 or 4 innings the Guardians are in trouble because Gaddis, Holderman, and Herrin have all pitched two days in a row, throwing 37, 34, and 25 pitches, respectively. Maybe Herrin could go a third day after just 25 pitches.

Festa and Armstrong were off Wednesday so Festa may go long relief if necessary. I believe we also have Heuer and Dion, but I doubt that Vogt wants to throw minor leaguers to the dogs unless the game is effectively over.

This could easily be a blowout with Festa, Heuer, and Dion taking one for the team after Cecconi gets run early. I'll be shocked if he's out there to start the 5th.
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here?

Some interesting observations of questionable value...

1) The Guardians are 15-12 vs teams with winning records.

2) We have only 40 games left vs teams with winning records, thirteen against the White Sox.

3) Against teams that are arguably the very best teams, those considered the 'real contenders'...

Dodgers
Yankees
Brewers
Braves
Phillies
Rays
Mariners

We are 10-8. We only have thirteen games left.

This is all subjective and subject to change, as some teams get hot and others do not, but you get the idea.

The general perception is usually 'but Cleveland plays in the weak AL Central.'

But thats not the case at the moment. Weve only played 14 games in the division. Thirty eight to go.

For some reason the Guardians are throwing breaking balls on the inside corner to Ben Rice. He lined a few of them foul and then adjusted and ripped a double into the right field corner.

I would pitch him down and away and try to get him to hit it to center, where fly balls go to die in Yankee Stadium.

Hate to say it but all signs point to Guardians losing this game tonight.

Argument could be made they'll win but unlikely.

I see them losing if they don't score the way they have been and keep Yankees bats at bay.

If they can do that, they'll win.

Just don't think they will.

They could.

Just don't think it's going to happen.

I'd be happy if they pull it off.

But I can live with it if they lose, which seems more likely.

Two most likely outcomes:

7-5 win (35% chance)
3-1 loss (65% chance)

I think we all know we're looking at option 2 here.

I'm disappointed at your option 2 choice. Expected something more like 10-1

This team vexes me. I am vexed.

Lose to bad teams at home, beat good teams on the road.
Are your undies not built for 162? MLB has wild variance of performance month to month, week to week, and day to day. Especially teams as young as we are.

Don't be vexed until after the All-Star break or if we were performing as well as the projected Division winners at the beginning of the year, Detroit Tigers. Is that Twitter Chris guy okay?

The Yankees are 3-10 against teams with winning records. Maybe 3-11 by tonight.

An interesting observation of questionable value.
It does have some value, and will have even more, IF the Guardians continue to win.

If we continue to play fairly well, the focus will begin to shift towards seeding.

We are presently 2 games behind Tampa and a game behind NY.

Tampa has nine games left vs the Dodgers, Braves, and Phillies. We are done with those three big boys.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have fifteen games left against winning NL teams that weve already played.

Not to mention that they have seven games left to play against each other.

Guardians beat the Yankees again! Jose is hitting .400 at Yankee stadium!

So who sits today, Manzardo, DeLauter, …?
