Coming off a shutout of the Diamondbacks and with a day off between home series, not to mention getting some additional major league talent at the deadline, the Guardians welcome the 47-66 Mets to town.
The Mets are 22-32 on the road, 13-25 in their last 38 games, and 22-38 against teams .500 and over. Their top offensive player by far, Juan Soto, is out. He’s hitting .283/.947.
In the absence of Soto the highest OPS on the team belongs to Tyrone Taylor (.241/.794), but he just got traded. The highest remaining players based on OPS are Francisco Alvarez (.781), and Francisco Lindor (.754). Lindor has 9 home runs and 25 RBI’s in 214 AB’s.
The Mets are 29th in runs per game on the road at 3.8. With Soto out they might have the worst offense in baseball. They rank 28-30 in OPS, OBP, XBH%, and BABIP. They’re 14th in home run percentage so they go for the long ball. However, Soto has 21 home runs and nobody else has more than 12, so that ranking should be lower now.
The Mets are much better at pitching, ranking 14th ERA. They are 7th in strikeout percentage, 4th best in throwing out base stealing attempts, and 8th in bullpen ERA. That being said, they just traded two of their best relievers who had ERA’s of 1.96 and 2.56 in a combined 94 innings. They have three good starters going this series.

Cecconi v. Christian Scott, RHP, 3-3, 2.99 ERA on Wednesday
Bibee v. Nolan McLean, RHP, 7-7, 3.29 on Thursday

Game 1 preview:
Manaea is a 37-year-old lefty, so you know right away he will give the Guardians fits with his soft tossing. Manaea has a 3.77 ERA in his last five starts. In his last two he held the Dodgers to 1 run and the Braves to 2 in 6 innings each. Opponents are hitting .255/.789 off him when he starts.
He has 23 appearances but only 9 starts. I don’t know if they’ve been using an opener when it’s his turn or what. Right-handed hitters have had success hitting .274/.835 off him this year. He’s been extremely tough with two out and RISP, holding batters to a .178 BAA.
Jose is only 3-for-18 off him despite hitting from his stronger side. Hoskins has 2 home runs in 8 at-bats against Manaea.
The Guardians counter with Joey Cantillo, 8-6, 3.88 ERA. Cantillo was decent in his last start, shutting out the Reds for 4 innings on 4 hits and 8 K's. But he threw too many pitches and was removed after just 4 innings. In the last 30 days opponents are hitting .316 against him.
The only Mets player to ever face Cantillo is former White Sock Luis Robert, who is 0-for-8. Robert missed three months and has only 122 AB's this year. Since returning from injury he's 5-for-37.
The front office made it clear the Guardians are going for it this year with four trades at the deadline, all of which brought in major league players that addressed a specific problem. They sent down Manzardo; hopefully they can fix his problematic swing mechanics and hitting approach like they did with Rocchio when he was sent down early last year.
This might be the most favorable series left on the schedule, especially with Soto out and the Mets having just traded their highest OPS player other than Soto, a starting pitcher, and two good relievers. The Mets definitely have nothing to lose and will probably be giving some young players some looks.
