But down the stretch aka September or multiple injuries in the pen, you could see him out there...

I'm saying he's a starter unless injuries force him into the pen...
That could be, but I suspect Allen or even Cantillo would take that role first. Doesn't Allen struggle getting through a lineup more than once or twice? If so, seems like a good role for him.

Allen is having the same issue that Morgan had... he doesn't have enough good pitches to be a legit starter right now... Durability and other factors are fine but he needs some refinement in another pitch...

Now, if injuries happen and they need a long man like Avila was last year, I could see him getting that role...

That being stated Arizona used Cecconi as a swing man last season... he had 5 starts and 3 saves at AAA... He was brought in to be a starter, but he's got a fair amount of experience as a reliever as well and like Gaddis his fastball plays up out of the pen so he is more effective there at the moment

The name that sticks out to me is Michael King. If the Padres are seriously interested in moving him, I'd be doing more than due diligence.

The Padres have an abysmal farm system, esp on the position player side...only two OFs, and no 1Bs, listed in the only prospect list I've seen. In fact, they only have eight position players listed.

I guess I could have replied here with my comment in the other thread...

I like King, but he's not worth the prospect capital we would have to spend on getting him

I looked at what it would cost to get him... It's a no from me, even though I do want him

King would be a rental. If his trade value reflected that, then I would be interested. IF the Guard's truly consider themselves a contender, they need to drastically improve SP.

I would love to add King, but the cost would be substantial.

He'd be worthy of a QO if he repeats his 2024 season IMO, so you could recoup some of your prospect loss via draft pick compensation though.

If we were closer to the end of our window instead of our current standing I'd go for it. But as of now it is too cost prohibitive I believe.

With all due respect Coach, you have no idea what it would cost exactly to get him. Sure, BTV's sight probably has his value high, but they don't factor in that the Padres need to shed payroll. I'd also argue that King's value probably hasn't been adjusted/updated to reflect his short term control.

Let me ask you this, is a 3 way deal where one of McKenzie or Lively is dealt to acquire a guy like King make sense? Regardless, I don't see the cost as being prohibitive. What is getting in the way of this idea is that King is a FA after this season.

I find myself in a rare predicament Mott, and that's being in disagreement with you. They've addressed the rotation nicely and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect more from Williams and McKenzie. So right now the SP depth is Bibee, Williams, Ortiz, McKenzie, Lively, Cecconi, Cantillo, Allen with Bieber coming back around the break or slightly before. That's actually a talented mix of SP with Lively having the lowest floor, but he's a bulldog and looks like a damn good BOR SP. I fear some regression is coming with him though.

I understand your point. But Bibee is the only one you can depend on. The rest is just potential. Now it's reasonable to assume some of that potential can be realized. But I wouldn't want to bet the house on it.
Williams and Ortiz seem hopeful for a successful 2025. Sadly, I see no reason for optimism for McKenzie. Lively is WYSIWYG. I think Cecconi and Allen still need grooming. Bieber will be coming back from surgery and you don't know what you get the 1st year back from surgery.
I think it will be extremely rare for a Guards SP to pitch into the 6th inning in 2025. That may be part of their reasoning for building a super bullpen.
For me, it's hard to say this is the starting rotation for a team with championship aspirations.

Why would we move someone with years of control for a rental? That's part of the issue...

Plus the Padres don't have to trade King... It's not like they are completely out of a wild card spot... They want to cut cap not exactly trade away the season...

Kayfus and Peterson and ??? for King?

Arrg.. why i am sucking myself into this crap? lol
...so you can read what's being suggested / believed to be an equal / reasonable deal and lose what's left of your mind.. How many other sites do you visit where three or more top 20 prospects from a top five ML farm system are offered for a one year rental on a guy who has one peripherally unusual good year?... and they think they're being magnanimous in their suggested reasoning !..

When you're done..... Lobotomy this way ===========================================>
