I mean... he's sort of right. While I don't think there should be artificially structured percentages (I think that kind of works against the idea of NBA players, who are universally male, becoming coaches), I do think the NBA could and would be benefited by having a somewhat more gender diverse coaching pool.

Why?

Well... we just hired Frank Vogel here in L.A. I don't think Vogel is necessarily a better hire than the potential hire of Becky Hammon, assuming she's bringing the Spurs system and culture with her to a post-LeBron Lakers (which I think everyone expects sooner rather than later).

But the constant retreading of the same NBA coaches should probably stop or at least the pool could be benefited by expansion. Maybe that's NCAA coaches (as we see with the Cavs), maybe it's international coaches (again, Cavs), but there's also female coaches as a potential resource as well.

Former WNBA star Becky Hammon is an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wants half of all new referees joining the league to be women -- and he would like to see teams hire female coaches, too.

In an appearance Thursday for The Economic Club of Washington, D.C., Silver said two of the past five refs added from the developmental G League were women, bringing the total number of female officials to three.

"It's an area, frankly, where I've acknowledged that I'm not sure how it was that it remained so male-dominated for so long. Because it's an area of the game where physically, certainly, there's no benefit to being a man, as opposed to a woman, when it comes to refereeing," Silver said.

"The goal is: Going forward, it should be roughly 50-50 of new officials entering in the league," he said. "Same for coaches, by the way. We have a program, too. There's no reason why women shouldn't be coaching men's basketball."

There has never been a female head coach in the NBA.

Becky Hammon of the San Antonio Spurs was the league's first full-time female assistant. Kristi

In December, the Indiana Pacers made Kelly Krauskopf the first woman to hold the title of assistant general manager in the NBA.
I suppose that it must be a quote of white men too , a quote of gay men too, a quote of asian men too, a quote of latin men too and a quote of transexual men. For equity and justice...

Honk honk

Adam is pushing that "equality" agenda.

I saw a sign on a subway in NYC a couple years ago that said, "The Future Is Female". Silly me, I didn't take a pic of it.

You have to be blind to not see the "pro woman" agenda. And if you stand opposed to their agenda, they will use the, "you are a 'sexist" line.

They always push agendas and put labels on people who oppose their agenda to make people less inclined to "oppose" the narrative that they are pushing so they won't "be" the label they put on those who oppose.

Adam Silver is just doing his part in pushing the agenda. Didn't he just say he also wants like half of the NBA refs to be women? The NBA is a business and a world full of idols. With so many eyes on the NBA, it is a great platform to push agendas and fashions, trends, etc etc.

We live in a day where masculinity is frowned upon and discouraged, while trying to cause mass confusion amongst our children trying to encourage boys to be girls and avoid the "boy", "girl" genders at birth to "allow freedom for the child to choose their own gender."

What a world, What a world we live in.. A day of darkness and not light. The time of the heathen where we call light darkness and darkness light. We call sweet bitter and bitter sweet.

End rant. Disgusted by the agenda.

Lots of the commentary in here should be in the political forum, not around the NBA.

I think he worded it poorly (he shouldn’t have said 50%, and obviously 50% of the league won’t have female coaches soon), but nothing wrong with the sentiment. Plenty of great female teachers of basketball in the world, and hopefully we see more of them make it to the NBA.

Bullshit on the political forum. This has nothing to do with politics. We're talking about the NBA. Fuck politics.

I wasn’t referring to your post. Glad you’re passionate?

Counter idea: Who cares what you look like or what you have in your nether region. If you're an elite coach, you should be in the NBA.

NBA is in the private sector.
and feminism isn't public policy. But it is political.

There are perfectly legitimate reasons why the NBA would be male-dominated, just like the lawsuit against Hooters for insisting on female waitresses was laughed out of court.
my post said nothing about why the NBA would be male dominated. Just that it was political. But the case at hooters was actually settled out of court at 3.7m to the plaintiffs

I dont agree with the totalitarian concept that everything is political.
There is policy and there is culture. The two shape each other. Having a dog isn't political, but the focus on demographic makeup of institutions has been a political issue for a long time.

Silver is obviously a moron for saying 50% needs to be female. And I think there are way too many people going way too hard with really dumb ideas like this.

But Should there be ateast SOME female coaches etc? I Mean yea, probably.

The settlement didn't affect Hooters policy of hiring only women to be servers. Defense won that issue on motion. They settled claims relating to non-serving positions.
