A Look Inside the Dysfunction of the Cleveland Browns

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Damn what an article. While reading this it struck me just how similar Jimmy Haslam and Dan Gilbert are to each other as owners. It’s also amazing just how awful literally all of their football/basketball instincts are respectively, and how both men believe they know more than the professionals they hired and routinely overrule them, despite disastrous results.

Thank god Haslam hired John Dorsey and was talked into giving him full autonomy, and thank god LeBron James had ties to this area and decided to come back for a few years.

So let me get this straight... Dorsey walks in, tells Hue he’s getting fired, and Hue replies “Get the fuck out of my office.” Hahaha. I need more.

What I’d give to have been a fly on the wall for that one.

Not a lot of new news, seeing it put in print is pretty damn amazing to see. Haslam was a total shit head.

The 4-1 vote for McDermott and subsequent hiring of Hue, in retrospect, was a massive organizational failure that, it appears, Haslam has learned from in this hire.

Additionally, the whole thing about Haslam nodding off during meetings...just lmfao. Dude is such a flashy hillbilly. One of a kind, that one. Minor miracle that the Browns ended up in the seemingly capable hands of John Dorsey.

Didn't learn a lot TBH. Who cares about the past when the future looks as bright as it is? Obviously going to be a learning curve/excitement to being a new owner. Seems like the Haslam's have been humbled and finally learned their lesson. Let's hope it stays that way.

Ray Farmer is more of a bitch than I thought he was.

And I didn't know that was possible.

Two things missing from that story: what the hell happened with the botched McCarron trade? Did Sachi fall on his sword for it like everyone suspects?

And how does Dorsey work with DePodesta now? That part was pretty vague.

"Sources"

How much of this is true? My guess is very little.

I was hoping some of the bad stuff would finally come out about Banner or Schiner, but whatever. Banner is a pig and should be crucified by the NFL media; instead hes questioned anytime Browns dysfunction comes up.

Pretty easy to see who was interviewed.

Eh...so what? That's all now in the past. The national media wants to recycle all the old stuff to keep up controversy and clicks.

Jimmy made a mistake common to a lot of sports owners, and thought he knew more than he did. He ended up learning differently.

Even once he'd figured out that he didn't have all the answers, he had a huge problem, which is inherent in owning a sports team. That problem is that you have to identify and hire a true expert without having that expertise yourself. That is enormously difficult to do because you lack the knowledge necessary to evaluate your hire on a technical level. It makes you susceptible to bullshitters and bad information. It's the same reason Lincoln kept hiring shitty generals who kept losing battles until he found Grant. No, I'm not saying Jimmy is Lincoln -- I'm simply pointing out the inherent difficulty in non-experts trying to identify the most qualified, best performing expert.

Fortunately -- and this is the overriding point in all of this -- Jimmy finally found the right guy in Dorsey. He then changed the structure of the organization so that the coach reports to the GM, not to Jimmy. That makes it apparent that he has recognized his lack of expertise, and adjusted his role accordingly.

Wonder whether Depodesta was one of the sources

I'm sure the analytics guys will feel all warm and fuzzy knowing John Dorsey was referring to them as "fucking nerds" among his associates. Whether he appreciates what they do now or not, that die's been cast.

The author clearly is a shit-stirrer, so I'd take that with a huge grain of salt. The reporter can take a quote that is 100% accurate and present it in a manner that is misleading as hell because we don't know the context/tone with which it was said.

"Fucking nerds" could easily be an inside joke that Dorsey would have no problem saying to their face, and they all get a chuckle out of it.
