Aaron Rodgers And the Issues

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Eh.

I would trade Baker and a couple 1sts for Aaron Rodgers and not think twice about it. Cap will be tight, but adding the reigning MVP to this roster is worth it.

Even with around 20 mill in cap space, with the 30 mill against the cap Rodgers would cost we have to cut some people to make room on our 53 man roster not just 51. Further we might have to restructure Rodgers contract as one of his beefs with the Pack is his contract.

Who do you cut to save about 10 mill as trading Baker alone isnt enough cap room?

ha! no way in hell the browns should/would throw in those picks. You are talking about a QB that has 3 (maybe) good/great years left. Versus a QB who has 10-15(hopefully).

Rodgers absolutely would make the browns the super bowl favorites for as long as rodgers can stay on top of his game. However as soon as he retires the browns have to rebuild again.

cap space isnt that big of a deal. Rogers would take up 12 million more in 2022, and 8 million more in 2023, its actually probably 10-15 million less in 2024.

Rogers salary/annual bonus/etc counts for 22 million in 2022, 26 million in 2023, and 26 million in 2024. The browns may need to rework his contract a little bit but for the most part Rogers has already/will get paid 40+ million for each year due to his signing bonus

Aaron Rodgers is 37.

Brees is retiring at 41 after only playing 11 and 12 games the last two seasons. He has been elite. Peyton was awful for two years after 37.

Brady will retire at 58 or so and has been pretty damn good.

Assuming those are reasonable comps, you could potentially get a few more years out of him. Worst case, he becomes a FG kicker or something like Blanda.

I know everyone seems really focused on short vs long-term. I think the question is how long do you think Rodgers plays? With a better OL and a desire to still play, he could easily play another 5+ years. So is Baker at age 31 better than Rodgers at 42? I think if Rodgers remains healthy and wants to continue playing, isn’t there a good chance he’s still a better QB than Baker at that point?

Let’s not play ourselves here friends. Rodgers would turn this into the #1 offense in the league overnight. I like Baker, but people seem to be selling short on what Rodgers would actually do in this offense. He was the NFL MVP last year and the Browns on the whole have a better line, a better group of skill position players, and an offensive system tailor made for his skill set.

The real question is what does Rodgers have left in the tank? He will turn 38 in December. He’s generally been healthy throughout his career aside from two seasons. He just had the best year of his career and was the MVP. Three time MVP and Super Bowl champ. One thing to remember with Rodgers: while he’s been in the league for 16 years, he didn’t play until his 4th season in the league. This could mean that he would actually have way more left in the tank than most players around his age or younger.

For example (year drafted in parenthesis):

Rodgers (2005):
Age: 37
GP: 197
GS: 190

*7 GP were mop-up duty in first three seasons.

Stafford (2009):
Age: 33
GP: 165
GS: 1

Ryan (2008):
Age: 35
GP: 205
GS: 205

If we’re getting three years of Rodgers at Elite/MVP caliber level and two years of Pro-Bowl caliber football after that, sign me up. The Browns would have a legit shot to win the Super Bowl for the next several years with Rodgers. While we can project Baker to be a great QB, there’s obviously still a lot of unknowns.

IMO, trading for Rodgers also doesn’t mean much when it comes to long term implications. Baker’s salary goes up next year, and if he signed a new contract with the Browns he likely gets more than what Rodgers currently makes. Rodgers makes $37 mill in 21, $39 mill in 22, and $28 mill in 23. (His salary drops in a year cap is projected to jump). Then is a free agent in 2024 at 40.

All it means is that they’d need to work on grooming an eventual replacement. Assuming the cap goes up as projected, there’s likely little-to-no real roster impact.
i think counting on Rodgers to play at a MVP level after 40 (3 years) is a recipe for disaster.

I love Baker, appreciate Baker. Would take care of his wife if anything happened to him.

But if we're getting 2-3 good years out of Aaron Rodgers I'd swap in a minute. Look at Tampa Bay with Tom Brady. He didn't even play that great.

Can't take having a championship window for granted. It doesn't last in the NFL. If Stefanski, Berry, and company are the real deal, we'll stay competitive after he's gone. Or we'll at least have a front office capable of a rebuild.

37 isn’t what it used to be. Tom Brady has played 7 seasons and won 4 Super Bowls since turning 37. He’s thrown 30,055 yards and 222 touchdowns in the regular season during that period, and he’s played 108 out of 112 regular season games - only 4 he missed were the 4 he was suspended for.

Point is, Aaron Rodgers potentially has a lot of good football ahead of him. It’s a risk. He might be post-37 Peyton Manning instead of Tom Brady. But it’s a risk you take if you can.

At his current contract, Rodgers cap hit to the team that trades for him would only be about 23mil, because the signing bonus doesn't come with him (base salary and workout/roster bonus would), We could find 3 mil easily.

We'd have some dead money with trading Baker, so its a little more than 3mil.

And even it was 10mil, we'd find a way to convert some of Jarvis/Tretter/OBJ/Bitonio to a signing bonus and make it work.

Bigger issue is that GB takes a big cap hit by trading Rodgers. That is a bigger impediment than us finding a few mil.

But if we really could swing a deal for Rodgers, cap won't stand in the way.

Yeah.

And you trade that for Aaron Rodgers every freaking time.
1 for 1, I would probably go for it. Assuming Rogers doesnt want a full contract rework

but no way in fuck i give up first round picks+baker for Rodgers.

We shouldn't look at Aaron Rodgers age and treat him like on old 37 year old QB with a lot of miles on him. He only played in 7 total games his first 3 seasons. He could easily tack on 3 more good years because of that. He's only been a starter for 13 seasons.
