Akron Fires Rob Ianello

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Uh isn't the NCAA going to potentially hand down some sort of suspension or something for Tressel (but hey this is the NCAA that lets the Callipari's of the world job hop after getting teams in trouble all the time)? I don't follow Akron football much but attending Kent State I can't remember the last time they were good since Charlie Frye. When I covered Kent State I think it was the previous head coach's last season there and the first season in the new stadium. Despite having a lousy season the stadium was really loud and alive towards the end of the game (which Akron won and I was glad because it meant I didn't have to travel to Philadelphia). I tuned in to this year's game and the stadium looked halfway empty which is a shame because it's a nice stadium but with these smaller programs you have to win to grab people's attention.

Akron is terrible, as Ianello was very bad hire and simply not ready for the job - it seems widely known that he was in over his head. Anyway, Tressel does have strong ties to the area and they do have a very nice facilities and a stadium. Additionally, he could potentially put together some very nice recruiting classes as NE Ohio has some great HS football talent - which they've never really been able to capitalize on.

But yeah, they are very bad and he'd have to build up a small, weak program from the ground up.

MAC Champs and went to a bowl in 2005...they've been pretty bad since then though, and terrible the past two seasons.

There is almost no chance that Tressel coaches anywhere in the next few years. He'll probably get a show cause slapped on him for the tattoo mess. That'll keep him from coaching anywhere for the next few years.

I have no inside info at this time... but my first question for Tress is WHY? You have millions in the bank and you are over 60 years old. You fell on the sword, while the director of scouting from tOSU was promoted to head coach, because obviously Fickell had no idea of what was set up at tOSU for players who want perks but the head coach did.

Do you really want to get involved with all of this mess again, Tress? Is it worth it?

Tressel to meet with Akron tomorrow

A certain former Ohio State Buckeyes coach could be trading in his scarlet sweater vest for blue and gold and taking a short trip up I-71.
Jim Tressel, confirmed by a source at the University of Akron was at the men’s basketball game against Detroit last Saturday night. The same source says that officials from the University will be meeting with Tressel on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.

Tressel earned his Masters in Education at Akron in the 1970s and was a Graduate Assistant and helped coached quarterbacks, receivers, and running backs.

It has also rumored that the board of donations at the University of Akron are pushing hard for Tressel to coach the Zips football team, who went 2-22 under former coach Rob Ianello, who was fired after two years on Saturday.

Goldhammer reported on Twitter yesterday Tressel to Akron won't happen.

The NCAA is going to announce a multi year ban for JT when the ruling comes down in December.

Well...that's not going to happen.

But he will get a 'show cause' penalty.
