Browns trade struggling WR Davis to Pats for pick
Aug. 22, 2005
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

CLEVELAND -- Wide receiver Andre' Davis has been traded by the Cleveland Browns to the New England Patriots for an undisclosed draft pick, a source within the league told the Associated Press on Monday.

Davis, who has been mentioned in trade talks for several months, became expendable after the Browns drafted rookie Braylon Edwards, and Antonio Bryant and Dennis Northcutt both emerged during training camp.

Davis had also lost his job as the club's No. 1 kick returner to rookie Joshua Cribbs.

The 26-year-old Davis is already in New England, said the source, who didn't want to be identified because Davis still had to pass a physical to complete the deal. If all goes well, the teams will announce the trade Monday afternoon.

Last week, the Browns gave Davis and his agent, Kennard McGuire, permission to seek a trade. The Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks also expressed interest in Davis.

McGuire didn't immediately return a phone message.

Davis was selected in the second round (No. 47 overall) of the 2002 draft by former Browns coach Butch Davis, who thought the former Virginia Tech track star's speed would open things up for Cleveland's offense.

However, injuries have slowed Davis' development.

Because of a nagging toe injury, he started only seven games and had 16 receptions for 416 yards and two touchdowns last season. One of those TDs was a 99-yarder from Jeff Garcia, the longest pass play in Browns history.

Davis' days seemed numbered in Cleveland when first-year Browns coach Romeo Crennel said the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder was having "an average camp."

Davis, who is eligible for free agency next year, got off to a strong start as a rookie with Cleveland. He scored a TD in his first three games, becoming just the sixth rookie since 1970 to begin his career that way.

In 2003, Davis had 40 catches for 576 yards and five TDs.

Man, I really liked Andre Davis, wish we coulda kept him. But Bryant looks great, Edwards looks awesome, and Northcutt... well I'd take Davis over Northcutt.

ughhh for only a 5th round pick? we could've gotten more.......

I wanted at least a 3rd rounder if Dilfer goes for a 4th..oh well this obviously means that our top 2 receivers are Braylon and Bryant as shown in the last game :)

I'm all for it-- he can take his often injured ass and leave..

this only means good things in the future, considering we have guys like
BRANDON RIDEAU
JOSH CRIBBS

who i like alot better anyways, cribbs can return, and rideau has some nice size, that could give us another big target in the redzone

Rideau reminds me of Antonio Bryant kinda big physical and skilled. We need to cut Frisman Jacksons ass he isn't going to develop into what we thought..I wanna see Cribbs on a reverse and see what he can do..

Dilfer is way more valuable then Andre Davis. Don't fool yourself. All Andre Davis has is potential and an injury history. Dilfer may be aging, but he's a proven winner at the most important position on the field.

Could we of done better? Maybe, but at least we got something. Not like idiot Butchie who cuts Kevin Johnson for absolutely zero in return. :thumbdown

Savage has done a good job of getting something in return for our scraps. Every little bit helps!

im not mad considering rideau and cribbs will be playing for this team and they look great.I wish him the best...i liked him but he did get hurt a lot too.

Terrible trade #2 for Savage. He may be good at evaluating talent, but thus far he has proved he cant trade for crap..

He gives up a fourth for Dilfer, which blew my mind at the time.

And he gives away Davis, a second round pick when healthy has put up good stats, for a fifth rounder?!

Terrible. Inexcusable.
