My (work) bowling league started last week, my first time to bowl is this Thursday, having not bowled since last year's league.

I use the house balls so I go for the two finger, no thumb approach (I'll let someone else utilize that). Wildly inconsistent though, I bowled a 600 series but there were times I struggled to bowl 400, I think I averaged like 160-165. So this year I'm buying a ball and learning to bowl the "right" way. Right now trying to decide between the Brunswick Strike King and DV8 Misfit.

Any other bowlers?

Ahh.. A Bowling thread, nice.

I've been bowling since I was around 6-7 years of age, competitively since 12 in youth leagues.

Bowl two leagues every fall, book average(your highest average in the last 3 years), is 202 - but this season so far I'm at 222.

Leagues are usually just time for me to get drunk with my buddies and maybe win a few jackpots, the real thing is the tournaments in Vegas, New York, Cincy, etc. Been to all three and they're probably some of the best experiences I've ever had(not just bowling, of course).

As far as the two finger and no thumb approach, it's not a bad one. My buddy use to bowl two fingers, hell, he use to bowl with just two hands and averages 218 yearly. So it's not exactly uncommon or a bad way to approaching the game. I do advise learning with your thumb though, I've been trying to teach one of my brothers who bowls with me to utilize his thumb because ultimately it's the best way to get the most out of the ball.

Yeah I was reading about that today, apparently even some pro bowlers do the two finger no thumb. But from what I was reading, it's more difficult to be consistent, and if you don't have your form perfect you can hurt yourself in the long run. And I've definitely noticed some pain when I bowl a lot.

One of the best bowlers in the world throws with two fingers.

Whenever you bowl for long periods of time, especially without being use to it, your hand/fingers will definitely have pain. It goes away over time as long as you bowl once a week at least.

It's been so long since I've bowled in a league it bothers me. In high school I averaged a 176 bowling once a week. The couple times I've gone recently I've been much closer to an average in the 200's, though a smaller sample size. Eventually I want to get back into a league. My high game is a 234 which I've done twice.

As for 2 fingers or traditional, I am nowhere near as consistent with two fingers, but one of my 234 games did come that way. I'd still recommend using all 3, especially if you have any wrist problems like I do.

Pyro, back to the main forum....

I used to bowl when I was younger. I would throw my bowl in twisting motion, right before my release. So many people told me that I'd end up breaking my wrist.
Never bowled higher than a 196.
