My problem with Bravely Default was the recursion thing. It wasn't done well. 2nd world and on felt like a waste. Chrono Trigger did the same type of thing way better.

I'll look into Sands of Destruction. Sounds interesting

Sands of Destruction also has an anime, but it's a different story, but the same characters. It is one of those games with an unique storyline and turn based battle system.

I am trying to collect JRPGs so I have a lot of games lol

Is FF7 even that good? I've always heard 4 and 5 were the best

FF7 is good, but it's not the best one ever... Really FF7 is the game that set the modern JRPG genre especially in the US. It was that almost Jordan of the JRPG world in a sense. I mean I could name a bunch of games I like more, but without FF7 doing so well in the US, the market may have never got off the ground and we may not be having this discuss right now.

Though I am glad that post gave Valkyria Chronicles some love since I absolutely love that game!!! Fire Emblem is also an amazing series and Persona 5 Royal (Royal version is the better of the two versions of the game) ends up being one of the best JRPGs ever

Fair enough. It was before my time, but wasn't Chrono Trigger really popular on the SNES?

Big ups for FE. One of my favorite series cross-genre. I've been meaning to play Valkyria Chronicles as well, along with the rest of my Steam Library

Chrono Trigger was popular, but it actually got more popular later as JRPGs got universally more popular.

So I am guessing you really aren't as familiar with the PS1/PS2 JRPGs? Legend of Dragoon, Suikoden series etc?

Gotcha, to be completely honest, you cannot be a JRPG fan without having a backwards compatible PS3. The number of very good JRPGs on the PS1 and PS2 is very high. Vita and PSP have a fair amount as well, but the 100s of them on the older PS consoles that haven't been remade is something that you wouldn't expect.

FF7 is sacred, like Chrono Trigger. People will say FF6 is the best from the SNES era and I can't argue with that, but FF5 was always my personal favorite.

Super Mario RPG The Legend of the Seven Stars always gets slept on. It's one of the best RPGs of all time, and one of the best games ever made for SNES.

Totally OT, but niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice avatar :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

FF6 will always be the best to me, followed by Chrono Trigger. I watched my late older brother play those when I was a young girl, and then I eventually grew up to play them myself on more recent platforms.

(My all-time favorite RPG, OTOH, isn't strictly a JRPG -- and that's Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar).

Of more recent ones, the Switch had a couple of really nice ones in Octopath Traveler (love the battle system) and Dragon Quest XI.

Tales of Destiny 2 (different name in Japan) was one of the first ones I really got to play and it's amazing (hard to get ahold of as well anymore). I have the entire Suikoden set as well, which can also be hard to get ahold of (2nd one with it's case is like 300+ dollars now).

I bought octopath when it came out and I was glad it had all the good elements of a legit JRPG but had its own twists as well. I'm glad you can get it on the XBOX now. I have a lot of the Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior games and 11 is good!

Though the Legend of Heroes series, in my mind, happens to be an amazing group of games, one of the best ever. Solid characters, story, and battle system. They are worth getting if you haven't yet! (Though good luck getting the PS4 version of trails of cold steel since they can be pricey depending on the edition)

Also the Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana is also super good! Probably the best one from that series which is solid.

By the way, since they put the semi-live-action genre in their best of all time series, I want the writer of that article fired for not putting Baldur's Gate in there. BG2 is still one of the best PC games I've ever played, and I go back to it every few years.

I cannot deny that logic! I am not much for action games, but the first two games I bought after we got the Ps2 was Dark Cloud and Dark Alliance. Dark Cloud is a solid RPG (closer to a Zelda mixed with dungeon crawler and world building elements). Dark Alliance is a game me, my brother and my cousin spent so many hours playing over the years. I was so happy Balders gate is on the switch!!!

I am fond of the early memories of the PS2, we got a bundle pack from Sam's Club that had a second controller with the games, Rachet and Clank and ATV off-road fury. Then I was able to convince my mom to get Dark Cloud and Dark Alliance. After that, there was no way I couldn't love video games lol

BG:DA was a hack-and-slash, like Diablo or Gauntlet if I remember correctly--right? I hesitate to call those RPG's, but they're certainly not turn-based.

BG, BG2, etc are turn-based live action. They're what Divinity Original Sin is based off of.
