Anyone else play JRPGs?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Final Fantasy VII Remake was a free PS+ game a month or two ago. I gave it a shot over the weekend and I gotta say...it's kind of shitty. The writing and voice acting are absolutely godawful, and it feels very Japanese in the way characters will randomly grunt or some other similar noise that feels very out of place in English conversation. It feels like they put the grunts in for a game that wasn't meant to have voice acting, but then left them in after adding the voice acting.

The game is visually gorgeous, but the combat sucks. I hate this pseudo turn-based bullshit. Either make it a legitimate action game or make it turn-based. This is the worst of both worlds...a clunky action game that forces you to micromanage like a turn-based game, which means you're constantly pausing the battle mid-combo because you need to use an ability, and since swapping between characters requires the same finger as moving your currently controlled character, that causes frequent hitches in the action too. It's just not fun.

I could probably power through this if the writing were better. But man, Cloud is just an asshole, and you spend so much of the early game around Barrett, who is also a huge asshole. And neither of them are cool or funny jerks. They're just joyless pricks. Barrett looks like they used the super soldier serum on someone from Jersey Shore and Cloud looks like a sixteen year old that's into emo music, so no coolness in their appearances either.

So yeah, fuck this game. Not gonna finish it. I'd be pissed if I had paid for it.

Final Fantasy IX was better. Fight me.

Cloud was a dick at the beginning of the original of FF7 as well lol Remember he was a hired mercenary for Avalanche and didn't care about anyone or anything...

I haven't played the FF7 remake yet to be honest, though I bought it. I collect games though so I don't care one way or the other.

FFIX ends up being underrated... I actually really liked that one once I actually sat down and played through it...

FF5-8 were all better than 9.

Also, whether you like it now or not, FF7 has probably the most memorable plot in the history of gaming.

I have no opinion on the remake.

Hard disagree. IX was the best of the PSX era. Honestly, that and XII are the only two that I've really liked since the SNES era. VII was always a little overrated (I have played the PSX version, mind you) in my eyes, and I didn't care for VIII.

Note that I haven't played XV or the MMO ones. XIII was straight trash, though.

You either like 8 or 9 not both at the end of the day... I have seen a bunch of debates online and its you like one or the other. Very few people like both lol

I though 12 was better than people say, but I could never get into 13... I don't get why it felt 12 got a lot more hate than it really should have in my mind.

10 will always be my favorite of them though....

I think the reason I prefer IX is that I find that the series is at its best when it's utilizing fantasy settings instead of sci-fi ones. In the VII Remake, it's so strange to see all these normal dudes walking around in suits in this retro sci-fi city, but then your characters look like they're from a completely different game with their ridiculous proportions and stupid outfits.

This probably explains why I liked IX and XII the most of the series 3D entries. I believe most if not all of the games from the SNES and prior are all fantasy settings as well, as is Tactics, one of my favorite PSX era games. Tactics and XII have the same setting if I recall correctly.

I saw that the XII remaster is around $25 on the PS Store right now. I'm thinking about grabbing it and giving it a replay.

I hated 13's combat but liked the rest of the game. Otoh I have very limited experience with the games, only playing all the way thru 13. I started 4,5 and 9 at various points and 10 has been on my play list for about a year now.

I am a level grinder so if I cannot stand the combat system, I really don't like the game... Hence why I couldn't really get into 13...

I love 10, at the time it was made, it had really good graphics, a great story and great characters... Rikku happens to be one of my favorite characters, look up the cosplay of her by Madikat, you won't regret it... Lol

Not sure if it counts, but anyone play the world ends with you? Just started it and the game handles very weirdly

I think I own the older version but I haven't really played it and technically it does since it is a JRPG

This is one of the better lists I have seen and because some of the games will no longer be available soon (PSP and Vita), it's a good list to look at and maybe download some...

Two of the games on that list I've beaten multiple times and honestly were major parts of my youth. Wild Arms and Grandia.

Wild Arms was the first RPG game I ever played and is probably the first game I remember beating that felt like an "adult" game. If you've never played that one, pick it up. It's great.

Love both of those series! I have all of them at my parents house and I remember it was the 3rd on for both of them I played a lot growing up!

Have you been playing any current ones? Any others on the list you recommend?

This is an interesting read! What do you peeps think?
