Around MLB 2026

I'm not confident that the Phillies firing Thomson will change anything. Most of their core players all seem to have aged past their prime, and are now stuck in a sprial

It's the Dave Dombrowski Effect. A price is always paid eventually.

First he strips the farm system to nothing and the core plays become aging veterans with almost zero trade value
And it's not merely that his teams start to play poorly, or that there's nothing in the pipeline to rebuild with, it's that your payroll has ascended to absurd levels you can't get out from under.

The biggest lie in free agency that we're told we must accept (because it's the "cost to do business") is that the back end of these contracts don't matter because you're paying for front end performance and you just have to live with the rest.

It's interesting to me that the smarter big market teams are starting to say, forget that nonsense, we'll pay you $60m a year for a couple of years then you can take a hike after that. Better than these $300-$400m long-term commitments. The contract Tarik Skubal and Boras expect to get may end up not being quite as lucrative as they think. At least not in the number of years offered.

Tarik Skubal out indefinitely with elbow surgery.

It's not Tommy John surgery.

Essentially he will be available for September/playoffs if need be... But this hurts the Tigers now, that's for sure...

Maybe he’ll be available. Arm injuries aren’t exactly a guarantee.

RIP
I remember well when Sterling broadcast Braves games in the 80's...I was never particularly impressed by his work. Later I found out he landed with the Yankees and was dumbfounded they chose him. As time went on, listeners discovered he was a good match for the arrogant Bronx Bombers: pompous, over the top, ascot-wearing, loudmouth caricature of New York baseball.

But as time went on, many of us softened on him. He was, after all, unique in broadcasting, and since when is that bad in an era most everyone sounds the same? He also was great with Suzyn Waldman, the first woman in a radio booth, who he treated as an equal and a respected baseball voice. Sterling also loved going to Cleveland, loved Progressive Field, and enjoyed the challenge of playing us, always said good things about the team and the organization. But first and foremost, he had a true passion for the game, and brought it every day he was in the booth. He will be missed, if only to have someone to look forward listening to when you actually DID beat the Yankees and you could enjoy listening to his sincere disappointment. Sigh. No more.

"And heavennnnnnnnnnnnnn wins..."
