In 2021, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit 42 home runs, led the NL, and signed a $340 million contract. He is six weeks into 2026 with zero home runs in 36 games.
Before you chalk it up to a slow start, go back to August 2022. Positive test for clostebol, an anabolic steroid. 80-game suspension. Adidas cut him within days and said "We believe sport should be fair." Adidas doesn't write statements like that for guys on the fringe. They write it when they had real money on someone.
He came back and hit 25 home runs in 2023, then 20 in 2024, then 25 again last year. Good numbers by any standard that isn't the one the Padres wrote on his contract. The power that made everyone believe never came back, and every year that goes by makes 2021 look more like something worth asking about.
He is making $20 million this year on a deal that runs through 2034. Twelve more years of paying for a player who may have only existed for one season.
When you watch him in 2026, do you see the player who earned $340 million, or do you see the question nobody wanted to ask in 2021?

I don't think 2034 is twelve more years from now.
 
Fernando has the money to take the undetectable stuff the other stars take. No excuse for the drop in power.
