Ask Bimbo

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sincerely the FO has pretty much stated All-Star or young guys. I could see them sending Tena plus a SP prospect at most for a rental. I really doubt they are willing to spend much on a rental.
I understand the price generally. But here is the current 40 man, and here is the list of rule 5 eligible. Make sure you add Joey Cantillo and Will Benson’s name to the list, 2 guys unprotected in the past who have become prospects likely to be taken if not protected. You can’t protect all these guys. Relative to spending… can they afford to not trade some these guys and potentially lose them for nothing in the Rule 5?

40 Man

Rule 5 eligible (Add Cantillo/Benson)

What is the current status with Lenny Torres. I noticed in a recent transaction that Torres was on leave or excused I believe it was for 10 days for what they called personal reasons. Is there anything of concern here with Torres, or is that a legitimate personal reason excuse which doesn’t lead to something else we always see with others? TIA

I value your opinion, and would like to see some more. What would you do if you were the decision maker next year with Giminez and Arias? Would you have them start up the middle based on what you know now?

I think Gimenez has been amazing this year and is my favorite Guardian right now. (Jose is so fucking good its almost boring to like him as number 1, lol), I love your insight, but also value your opinion.

What would I do?

I'd hold onto Rosario until this season is over (unless the team collapses between now and mid-July), move him in the winter, keep Gimenez at 2B, and look to come out of camp with Arias at SS. Range and high-quality defense up the middle is going to be a must have with the shift banned starting next year. Miller is fine up the middle in a pinch, and Freeman is a 2B only at the MLB level, but I think they need to explore the Ben Zobrist route with Miller starting this winter. Get him in the OF, get him working at 3B, make him an everyday bat or close to an everyday bat by getting him comfortable at any position.

Arias' ceiling in the banned shift climate at the MLB level is that much higher for me. Yes, the swing and miss is a concern, but the range, arm, and power potential from the right side is very intriguing.

@BimboColesHair : Came back to see what I need to know for the NBA Draft tonight. Have some quick hitters:

1) What are your thoughts on the futures of Amed, Franmil, Plesac and Civale? (Personally I think the organization has willing to move on from Plesac if we get appropriate value for a little while now--and with Franmil's decline, I think we're trying to move him to open up a spot for the youngsters).
2) It seems like Gimenez, Straw, Kwan, OGon, Naylor, Jose and Miller have all earned everyday spots moving forward. Do you think this holds? And, if so, what does that mean for the logjam of youth behind them?
3) Arias, Freeman, Jones, Naylor, Valera. Who ends up getting a shot this year, and who would you love to trade for fair value?
4) Rocchio, Angel Martinez, Jose Tena, Jhonkensy Noel. Who gets a shot over the next 2 years, and who would you love to trade for fair value?

1. Amed and Plesac are on borrowed time. Franmil will stick around for most of his contract (a lot of his problems with regards to fit on the roster stem from Amed). Civale it's a toss up between him and Quantril w/r to who they try to extend.

2. For this season, yes. But Naylor will not play every day this season and Miller will be more or less postionless to get his every day ABs. He'll DH, play 1B, play 2B, and maybe even some 3B or SS in a pinch to get into the lineup.

3. At this moment I'd be shocked if any of them do. Arias/Freeman have a chance if Amed is traded or there is an injury up the middle. Lavastida would get the call to come up to play C before Naylor. Valera won't come up until there is a full time OF spot open, which with Kwan and Gonzalez producing seems doubtful.

4. I'd trade Tena. I can see Noel and Rocchio potentially getting shots over the next 2. Martinez is still 3ish seasons away.

In relation to who all will be exposed in the next Rule 5 draft….are there any guys you can think of at the top of your head who will likely be left unprotected, and likely to be selected?

And out of that group, are there any of those whose value you deem too high to lose a guy or 2 like this? The reason I’m asking is relative to the trade deadline.

Obviously when going like a guy like Brian Reynolds, you’re giving up top prospects regardless. My question relates more to a potential half year rental like Wilson Contreras or pitcher Luis Castillo.

Can you think of a prospect package that you would be fine with sending out for one these type guys that normally would be too high of a prospect price, but maybe this year would make a lot of sense considering how much talent will be exposed for only 40 spots?

I’ll give an example. Would you be ok with a package involving Nolan Jones and Tyler Freeman for a rental guy to go all i. This year, considering there are no real paths for either at the big league club?

I can see Will Brennan being left unprotected and selected. 40 man is loaded with young OFs between Kwan, Palacios, Gonzalez, Valera, and now Jones getting most of his PT in the OF, on top of Franmil and Straw.

If he is left unprotected there is a high, high chance he is selected. Higher than Call, Benson, etc.

After that, maybe a reliever like Herrin or Enright.

I think it is only a matter of time until they move Jose Tena to an organization thin up the middle. A package surrounding him with a few secondary pieces for a short-term rental would be as far as I was willing to go this season.

I am not moving Freeman for a rental. Jones, it would depend on the rental.

What the hell is up with Straw? He looks like a completely different hitter this year.

Just not making quality contact.

Not chasing pitches and not whiffing all that much, but is just not seeing the ball well when he is hitting it.

Someone mentioned elsewhere, but he's almost being too patient as well. Needs to swing at more 1st pitches. When you are struggling to get going spotting a pitcher strike 1 makes ABs a lot harder.

Legit personal reason.

Jones, it would depend on the rental.

Let's play this game then. Surprise surprise, the trade deadline is today.

Knowing everything you know this instant, do you trade Nolan Jones for any of these rental players?

-Josh Bell
-Willson Contreras
-Noah Syndergaard

If we're looking at the Guardians right now and what they'd be after and who might be selling I think these would be the only rental targets who would be costly enough to possibly require Jones. Syndergaard's remaining salary is an obstacle as well.

Let's start with an addendum on the "today" portion of the restrictions.. there are 30 ML teams.. Fully one third is mostly hopelessly out of contention.. the other 20 teams are very much within what could be consider as plausible for contending for a wild car.. That said.. we will further state that the following ten teams have what the Guardians need to get them over the hump as they can/will win the division!!!

Those teams are:

Detroit Tigers
Kansas City Royals
Baltimore Orioles
Oakland Athletics
Washington Nationals
Pittsburgh Pirates
Chicago Cubs
Cincinnati Reds
Arizona DBax
Colorado Rockies

Who from these ten teams make the most sense given the "guys" the Guardians want to make available..?

Any chance you could expand on this? And I know it gets said from time to time but thank you. This Q&A thread is gold and you provide so much insight. Thank you!

If the Gards keep winning Willson Contreras makes too much sense not to happen. Perfect fit for wants and needs and Cleveland has the prospect capitol to get it done. Plus unlike someone like Bryan Reynolds they wont have to gut the system to get him since he's a strict rental.

Obviously I’ll let Bimbo speak for himself, but I took it as Amed can really only play SS and he’s not particularly good there. Without him on the roster, the Guardians can be more flexible/creative defensively
