Austin Carr is Too Awesome and is the Best!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
AC has been with the franchise in some form for 38 years. Like him or not, he'll likely only be replaced when he decides to retire or step away.

Best commentators - Objectively

S tier:

Miami guys
Laker guys

A tier

Nets

Subjective to taste: Really colorful commentators. Having fun.

Hornets
Bulls
Mavericks

Knowledgeable but may not pump up your mood:

Timberwolves
Thunder
Maybe Pistons cause they love us.

Worst:

S tier:

Warriors
Rockets

A tier:
Celtics
Raptors

B+ depending on whether they are losing or winning

76ers
Clippers
Spurs

With that kind of analysis we should open a 2021 commentators draft thread.

So you didn't list Atlanta coz they're too pathetic to even be listed right?

Had to watch the second half with their commentary and it was physical pain. The only thing they do is suck their own players off and cry about fouls not going their way. Just blegh.

The Pistons guys really do love us though lol. Their color I thought was very knowledgeable actually besides that too.

Color guys aren't supposed to deliver hard hitting analysis. I like Brad and think he did a fine a job, just he's too boring to be the color guy.
Uhhh, its not the play by play guy's job to analyze, so who's is it? AC provides color but no analysis. He's probably a great guy and was certainly a great player, but I find his repetitive routines with McLeod or the new guy tiresome and one learns very little from their broadcasts.

Broadcasts are for the lowest common denominator. You're not finding much analysis in any color commentator. If you're expecting coach Nick breakdowns, you certainly aren't finding them during the game.

I forgot about how bad they were because they sucked for so long. So sure, you can add them to the S tier of bad broadcasters.

I would also bump down the Nets because they don't have my goat broadcaster Ian Eagle, but instead they have Ryan Ruocco and Sarah Kustoc and they are a bit too hype for me.

My chill ears love the more knowledgeable, boring ones tbh.

Pistons guys, and particularly the play by play guy just gives compliments to every opposing player if he deserves it. Last night it was Tatum for the Celtics. He is also knowledgeable.

I don't even enjoy listening to Austin when they're winning! They get a 3 pointer, 'we need more of that'. Thanks!

I don't even expect analysis from him. He's like... just part of the atmosphere, like an old painting on the wall that's not some great work of art, but makes it feel like you're home. I sometimes switch to the other team's feed on LP, and let me tell you... there's a lot of hackery out there. Like during the Atlanta game: about two minutes in, Sexton takes it to the hole and scores, the color commentator (was it Nique? hard to tell sometimes) says "oh, his teammates won't like playing with him!" -- much better off listening to AC's blathering - and you get way better analysis anyway on a second screen via Twitter, NBA stats, etc, and then from podcasts later.

Yeah I don’t need analysis from AC. It would be cool if Campy and Phelps did anything in that department pre/post game and at halftime. He’s entertaining. He’s having fun. I dig it.

I only saw one broadcast with Daugherty, so I’m not expert, but I was very bored and thought he enjoyed hearing himself talk too much. He’d be better in Campy’s role in my opinion.

The best analysis I ever got from Campy Russel was that Blake Griffin “holds the ball like a grapefruit”

Well, giventh

Fair enough - how much analysis we're looking for in a color guy is a matter of taste, so there isn't really a right or wrong answer.

fratello is getting a bit older now, but he still is quality, a real pro. im quite sure John Michael is thrilled working with coach Fratello. i mean lets face it, its a titanic challenge working alongside austin carr in sooo many ways. along with Daugherty and Fratello, how about Richard Jefferson or Channing Frye... AC is a good dude, and I like the fact he really loves the Cavs, a true fan no doubt but the clown show is over...been over for years.

Only clown show here is you.

Richard Jefferson is busy unfortunately. He is on ESPN regularly and does Nets telecast stuff. Not to mention their podcast that has totally blown up. He was my dream get as well before BKN scooped him up.

I'm not sure Frye is/would be interested, but I'd like to see him as well.

I love AC, but I do appreciate the Czar's ability to deliver cool analysis without getting too wrapped up in being a fan. I was also a big fan of Matt Goukas for the same reason. Many thought he was too negative, but those Darius Miles teams needed negativity! Make a stupid play, get called out for it!

I love AC the person. That said he really is awful. You could basically replace him with a sound board and all his phrases. I really think our crew is one of the worst in the league. John Michael isn't bad but I just don't like his voice lol. I thought when the Nets had RJ and Ian Eagle they were the best in the league.

i realize he was an ok player at best for cleveland, but he needs to goooo.. i thought he was bad like 8-9 years ago but he has somehow managed to get worse every year. i literally can only listen to the blabber that spews out of his mouth for just a few mins b4 i need to turn him off. he literally brings nothing positive to the broadcast. awful, just awful. my dog could bark alongside this new guy and bring more to the game...and ofc sound waaayyyyy better. hit the links and the range AC and lose this gig....from what I hear his game needs it anyway.
I can give you everything else but you think Carr was “an okay player at best for Cleveland”? WOW!!!!!!
