I am the best man in a wedding coming up in July which means I have the responsibility of planning the bachelor party. The groom likes to fish, which I have little-to-no experience with (outside of deep sea fishing when on vacation). I know there are people here all over the Midwest, so I'm looking for recommendations. Here is the general criteria:
- Good fishing
- Within a reasonable driving distance from the Akron area
- Not overly douchey or commercial (like PIB for example)
- Can accommodate what might be up to almost 20 people (can get multiple Air BnBs, hotel rooms, etc)
- Looking at late-ish May for the trip

I've generally been concentrating my energy somewhere on Lake Michigan because it seems to have the best reviews. Any advice you guys can provide would be much appreciated!

What do you consider a reasonable driving distance?

I know my cousin/uncle have rented a charter in Michigan City before and were successful. I’m not sure on how easy it is to get a charter for that big though.

Late May is early in the Lake Erie fishing season, but charters will be available from Conneaut to Sandusky by that time. Pick an area. Plenty of Akronites and Youngstowners come to my home area of Ashtabula for fishing. Good food, restaurants, a bar scene, wineries, even a stripper dive bar depending on interests. Trout season will be over, so it's a great lake for you. Just need to pick the area you want to congregate.

Great movie, probably Tom Hank's best comedy, lol

< 6 hours, probably.

If you’re willing to go out on a limb, you can combine deep sea fishing and a strip club. @bronko

You are a good friend to build this around his primary hobby.

So what type of fishing do you think he was best like?

Certainly within the Great Lakes region there are a number of very different opportunities:

Salmon fishing: Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario are perhaps best. Michigan for big Kings and Coho, Ontario for big Atlantic salmon.
Steelhead: May might be out of season, but actually Western PA rivers running into Erie have great steelhead runs.
Lake Trout: Lake Superior and Huron. Some salmon there too.
Walleye: Lake Erie is a tremendous walleye fishery.
Northern Pike, Musky: The Northern areas of Michigan, WI, MN and Canada have some great lakes and rivers with trophy sizes for all those types of fish.
